Rockbrook is a sleepaway summer camp for girls located in the “heart of a wooded mountain” in Western North Carolina. Founded in 1921, our summer camp provides an exciting and enriching, fun and formative, camp experience for girls and teens ages 6-16.
Position Summary: This position supports our camp health services (aka Health Hut), with responsibility for providing direct patient care to our camp community (campers and staff). This includes camper check-in/out, administering medications, parent communication, record keeping, managing supplies, administering first aid, driving to/from appointments and urgent or emergency care visits, and handling emergency medical situations that may arise. This position reports to the Head Nurse and/or Wellness Director.
Time Commitment: The Camp Health Hut is staffed 24/7.
- Nurses work ~12-hour shifts and will rotate between day, swing, night, and overnight shifts based on needs of camp and nursing team.
- Work at least one session, arriving 2-3 days before the camper session begins (see dates below).
- Nurses receive one day off per six shifts worked.
- We ask that you live at camp in provided housing for the duration of your contract.
Compensation: $200/shift or opt to receive a scholarship for camper tuition.
- Bonus available for working more than one session.
- Accommodations provided in shared staff housing with A/C, wifi, bathroom, and kitchen.

Responsibilities:
- Review each camper and staff member’s health forms and identify needs and/or required attention.
- Distribute camper medications; review trip rosters and prepare medicines for trip leaders.
- Provide basic first aid (bites, stings, cuts); recognize, address and treat urgent / emergency situations, such as allergic reactions or injuries.
- Treat campers and staff when they are feeling sick or experiencing homesickness.
- Work collaboratively with the Camper Support Team (Directors, Camp Moms) to provide support to campers experiencing mental, emotional, and/or social health issues.
- Identify when a camper requires a referral to a physician or other care provider; schedule appointments for campers to see the visiting camp doctor or outside physicians, as needed.
- Arrange for transport of patients to off-campus appointments.
- Drive campers and counselors to medical appointments or urgent care visits, as needed.
- Communicate with parents in a timely manner about their camper’s health status.
- Maintain and issue first-aid kits for out-of-camp trips and designated spaces throughout camp.
- Participate in check-in and check-out days at start and end of each session, as needed.
- Follow appropriate medical routines including electronic record keeping in the daily medical log, disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications, and utilizing approved standing orders; complete and submit medical incident reports.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current license as a RN/NP (or other relevant medical professional).
- Current child, infant, and adult CPR, First Aid & AED certifications.
- Ability to create, update and/or monitor care, maintain records and implement the care plan.
- Able to use telephone, text messaging, and web-based computer applications.
- Desire and ability to work in a camp setting; experience working with youth preferred.
- Must pass a background check and have a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to live onsite at our camp location (Brevard, NC) for the duration of the contract.
- Must be able to lift or assist campers or staff.
- Must be able to navigate on uneven terrain to access remote locations on camp property quickly.
