Organization Overview: The Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology studies the roles of microbes and microbial communities in our changing climate. Experimental and computational projects are focused on understanding the roles of microbes in soil respiration (CO2 production) and engineering microbial CO2 fixation for carbon negative biotechnologies (CO2 capture). Compensation Range: Min: USD $50,000.00/Yr. Compensation Range: Max: USD $55,000.00/Yr.
The Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology seeks a motivated Research Assistant to join the team. The Research Assistant will also have laboratory management responsibilities in a hybrid computational/experimental microbiology lab working at the interface of microbiology and climate science. Experiments will involve standard microbiological techniques for isolating, culturing, genetically modifying, and characterizing microbes chemically/physiologically. Computational work could include genomic analyses, machine learning, and simple mathematical modeling approaches.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include the following:
- Setting up and maintaining laboratory equipment
- Preparing reagents, e.g. growth media, competent cells, stocks
- Conducting computational research tasks, e.g. genomics
- Completing laboratory duties, e.g. purchasing, scheduling, reagent management
- Conducting microbiological experiments
- Writing protocols, and eventually papers
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in the sciences
- Excellent English language communication skills, capable of clear communication in a work setting
- 1 or more years of programming experience in Python, Matlab, or something similar
- General numeracy skills, e.g. facility with numbers, algebra, and basic statistics
- 1 or more years of coursework in general biological knowledge
Preferred:
- Have experience with mathematical computing and a demonstrated interest in biological research, e.g. worked in a research lab
