Rockhurst High is a Jesuit Catholic, college preparatory school with an enrollment of approximately 860 male students. Founded in 1910, the school strives to serve an economically, socially and geographically diverse student population within the Kansas City metropolitan area. Academic excellence is a trademark of the school as well as a diverse array of successful co-curricular activities and teams.
PURPOSE
Rockhurst High School is seeking a career-minded individual to serve as a school counselor, starting in August of 2025. The ideal candidate will hold a masters degree in school counseling or related counseling degrees and be (or eligible to be) certified/licensed as a counselor in Missouri with a demonstrated ability to support students in a college preparatory environment. The counselor will work in a structured and collaborative environment with other counselors and teachers who are committed to the formation of each student according to the principles of the Grad at Grad: Open to Growth, Intellectually Competent, Religious, Committed to Doing Justice, and Loving.
Responsibilities
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to address the academic, personal, and social/emotional needs of students and to address problems in these areas as they arise
- Collaborate with department and school colleagues in operating tiered student support, wellness initiatives, and relevant data systems to support formative student outcomes, including but not limited to facilitating group counseling, group lessons (like advisories), and well-structured lessons.
- Manage and support an assigned student caseload and treat each student with individual care in overcoming any obstacles to their learning or personal growth and their wellbeing.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
- Participate actively in the school’s co-curricular and spiritual activities including student retreats, masses, service opportunities and orientation programs
- Communicate with parents in a timely manner including planning, implementing, and providing feedback in group and individual meetings about issues that impact the student
- Work closely with all members of the school community regarding the welfare of students
- Assist teachers and administration with the educational placement of students by using appropriate educational assessment strategies, and assisting student with course selections that are the most challenging and appropriate for graduation requirements and career plans
- Maintain accurate records to document interactions, interventions, and decisions involving students while maintaining the appropriate policies relating to confidentiality
- Work collaboratively with counseling staff and administration to determine student needs and to develop and implement programs that meet those needs including the evaluation and revision of the school guidance program
- Work with diverse student populations and serving as an advocate for students
- Adhere to the established ethical standards of professional school counselors.
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS
- Masters degree in school counseling or related counseling degree with certification/licensure in area of study, preferred
- Extensive experience (preferably 5 years or more) in personal or school counseling with high school students
- Demonstrated commitment to the principles of Jesuit education as set forth in Rockhurst’s Jesuit’s mission statement and the “Profile of the Jesuit High School Graduate at Graduation”
- Clear understanding of and commitment to Rockhurst High School’s mission
- Student-focused approach to counseling, which includes a desire to build positive relationships that are characterized by mutual respect and trust
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
- Strong collaborative skills
- Reflective practice and a desire towards growth
- Strong understanding of current theory and practice in school counseling
