The Academic Advisor is responsible for assisting in advising pre-nursing undergraduate students in our College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS). Advising is a professional relationship marked by a series of purposeful interactions, guided in theory and pedagogy, rooted in student learning outcomes. This position will work collaboratively with Academic Affairs, Student Success and Retention, and Student Life to ensure the highest quality services are provided to all students, with particular attention to those in our pre-nursing track in CNHS. This is in line with our core value, Cura Personalis (care of the whole person). In addition, the Academic Advisor will lead the charge to increase visibility, sensitivity, and inclusivity of students within their college and with the Rockhurst community. This position reports to the Senior Director of Student Success and is a 12-month position.

This position requires that the incumbent be an effective time manager and have strong technology skills. The position is responsible for maintenance of data in multiple electronic systems and that data must be maintained in an accurate and timely fashion.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Meets with students who are interested in pursuing courses of studies in our College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS), to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions; major exploration; course planning and registration; transfer credit evaluation/substitution; and graduate program preparation, along with admissions requirements and processes. Maintains students academic files that include record of the advising activity that takes place each visit.
  • Facilitates students academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar needs.
  • Develops and presents education programs designed to supplement or enhance academic preparedness. Collects and disseminates information to students, faculty and departments about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in the advising-related portion of new/transfer students and family orientation sessions.
  • Identify and collaborate with public and private entities that provide services, assistance, or information to students including other postsecondary institutions, healthcare providers, social services agencies, grant institutions, etc.
  • Review and recommend to the Senior Director of Student Success barriers that impact students success within the University.
  • Maintain an active research agenda on designated population services in higher education and best practices.
  • Serve as student advocate and act as liaison between student and faculty/chair; assist faculty with students of concern; assist with facilitation of class permissions, substitutions, graduation approvals, etc.
  • Serve as a member of the Student Success Network, providing outreach and support to designated students.
  • Participate, attend, or chair a variety of administrative and staff meetings and serve on committees and special projects.
  • May need to work some weekends and evenings. Some travel may be required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • 2 years of experience in higher education. Demonstrated experience in case managing, advising, or student success efforts.
  • Bachelors degree in education, social work, psychology, counseling, or a closely related field.
  • Knowledge of technology, especially accessibility tools and online student success software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to establish and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with students, faculty and staff, to work as a valuable team player, as well as function independently while managing and prioritizing multiple job assignments.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Masters degree in higher education, student affairs, social work, psychology, counseling, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Experience with assessment.
  • Experience designing inclusive programming that responds to a diverse student population.
