Position Summary

The Healthcare Simulation Technician supports faculty in the delivery of simulation-based training for healthcare programs, ensuring the effective operation of simulation technology and related instructional tools. This position is responsible for maintaining, programming, and troubleshooting high-fidelity manikins, control room systems, and other simulation equipment to create realistic clinical scenarios. Additionally, the role assists in integrating emerging technologies, such as virtual reality, to enhance experiential learning. By providing technical expertise and operational support, the technician helps facilitate a high-quality, immersive educational experience for students.

Examples of Duties - Essential Functions

1.
Simulation Technician and Equipment Management
  • Operates, programs, and troubleshoots high-fidelity manikins, control room systems, and audiovisual equipment to facilitate realistic clinical simulations.
  • During simulations, configures the control room to monitor student responses in real-time, adjusting patient vitals and verbal cues to ensure an authentic learning experience.
  • Provides real-time technical support during simulation sessions to prevent disruption to students’ learning experience.
  • Performs routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of simulation equipment, including manikins, task trainers, and related hardware/software.
  • Track and maintain inventory of simulation supplies, ensuring timely replacement and procurement of necessary equipment.
  • Coordinates repairs and service requests with vendors as needed.

Emerging Technology Integration & Development
  • Assists in implementing and maintaining virtual reality (VR) and other emerging technologies to enhance simulation-based training.
  • Collaborates with faculty and instructional designers to integrate new technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) into the curriculum to ensure students can bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application.
  • Keeps up to date with advancements in simulation technology and recommends innovative solutions to enhance training effectiveness.

3.
Faculty & Staff Training and Support
  • Designs and delivers multi-session faculty development program covering advanced manikin programming, integrating simulation into course objectives.
  • Develops user guides, tutorials, and documentation to support faculty in using simulation tools independently.
  • Assists in troubleshooting and resolving faculty concerns related to simulation technology.

4.
Simulation Lab Organization & Compliance
  • Ensures the simulation lab environment is organized, clean, and compliant with safety and infection control protocols.
  • Prepares and setup simulation scenarios, including arranging medical equipment, supplies and props for instructional activities.
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with accreditation and industry standards for healthcare simulation.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education – An Associate’s degree in Healthcare, Biomedical Technology, Information Technology computer science, electronics or related area is required.
  • Experience – A minimum of two years’ experience in healthcare setting involving patient care, equipment technical support and simulation is required.

Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience which ensures the ability to perform the essential functions of the position may substitute for the requirement(s).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Certifications in IT support, networking or audiovisual systems such as CompTIA A , Network or CTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Simulation, Biomedical Engineering, Nursing, Healthcare Education, or Information Technology
  • Five or more years experience in healthcare simulation operations, medical device support, or instructional technology management

Essential Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (Core Competencies)
  • Knowledge – Knowledge of operating, programming, and maintaining high-fidelity simulation manikins (e.g., Laerdal systems), audiovisual control room technology, and medical simulation software. Familiarity with virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and other immersive learning technologies used in healthcare education. Basic knowledge of medical terminology, patient care procedures, and clinical workflows to support realistic simulation scenarios. Understanding of simulation lab safety protocols, infection control standards, and accreditation compliance requirements for healthcare training programs. Computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite® products, especially MS Excel; general office procedures and office equipment.
  • Skills – Proficiency in programming and operating high-fidelity manikins (e.g., Laerdal, VR, etc.), task trainers, and medical simulation equipment. Diagnostic skills for troubleshooting and maintenance. Training skills to design and deliver training sessions for instructors on simulation technology and best practices for integrating it into curriculum. Simulation scenario development skills to assist faculty in developing realistic patient scenarios. Analytical & problem-solving skills to respond to technical failures during live simulations, ensuring minimal disruption to instructional activities. Critical thinking and decision-making skills to assess and implement technical solutions under time-sensitive conditions. Strong interpersonal skills to work closely with faculty, IT staff, vendors, and healthcare educators to enhance simulation effectiveness. Organizational and time management skills.
  • Abilities – Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair simulation equipment, as well as adapt to real-time technology challenges during live training sessions. Ability to train faculty and staff on simulation operations, develop user guides, and provide ongoing support for instructional use. Work independently and as part of a team; present information orally and in writing to groups and individuals; maintain accuracy and attention to detail; communicate tactfully; prioritize tasks; and maintain confidentiality as appropriate. Pass a criminal background check.

Other Requirements
  • Certified Healthcare Simulations Operations Specialist certification (CHSOS) issued by the Society of Simulation and Healthcare (SSH) required within 1 year of employment.
  • For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30-days of employment, and maintenance of an acceptable driving record are required.

  • Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period which is spent sitting while performing equipment setup and simulation, operating office equipmment such as computers, keyboards, 10-key, telephones, and other standard office equipment. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials up to 5 pounds daily and 5-25 pounds and 25 -60 lbs occasionally. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in an office environment. The employee is not exposed to hazardous conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and lighting is adequate.

Additional Posting Information

This is a full-time Classified, 40 hour per week (100%) position in the Nursing & Allied Health Occupations department. Starting compensation is entry level for Group 6 on the 2024-2025 Classified Salary Schedule.

Position is fixed term/grant funded through 6/30/2026, renewed annually, with continuation dependent upon funding. Grant funding is expected to continue through 6/30/2026. Fixed term/grant funded positions do not accrue seniority.
