Description
Performs a variety of manual labor duties related to the maintenance of Town property, including all grounds, rights-of-way, gateways, athletic fields, parks and streets.
Examples of Duties
- Inspects all playground equipment, play areas, and athletic fields on a daily basis looking for unsafe and/or damaged conditions; corrects all unsafe conditions and reports to supervisor.
- Maintains the general aesthetic appearance of Town property including, but not limited to, cleaning water fountains, blowing off sidewalks and parking lots, maintaining vegetation and streets.
- Drags and lines athletic fields before practices and games as required.
- Mows, plants, fertilizes, prunes, trims, edges, and sprays rights-of-way, athletic fields, and other Town property with appropriate equipment.
- Conducts routine maintenance of equipment including, but not limited to, sharpening mower blades, changing oil, changing tires, performing minor repairs; monitors major repairs by vendors; retains maintenance records on equipment.
- Receives citizen’s complaints or inquiries concerning public works operations and takes action as assigned by supervisor.
- Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment; secures worksites from safety hazards as necessary; attends safety meetings.
- Responds to questions and complaints from the public; carries out assignments in a non-disruptive manner in areas receiving heavy public use.
- Responds to emergency repairs and maintenance as assigned; during inclement weather, performs snow removal from Town parking lots, streets, and sidewalks.
- Maintains stock and inventory system for vehicle, equipment, and sign maintenance.
- Identifies, coordinates, and assists in the maintenance, installation, and repair of Town signage.
- Identifies and performs sidewalk maintenance by replacing damaged sidewalk sections and other maintenance issues as required.
- Maintains a variety of records; makes periodic and special reports of work performed.
- Promotes and supports the overall mission of the Town by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.

Local Governmental Employees Retirement System
All regular employees are automatically enrolled into the NC Local Governmental Employees Retirement System (NCLGERS). The employee contributes 6% of gross wages to the retirement account. The Town contributes based on guidelines set by the retirement system. Participation begins on the first day of work. Employees are fully vested after 5 years of creditable service.
401k Supplemental Retirement
The Town contributes 5% of gross wages for regular employees. Employees may voluntarily elect to make additional contributions on a pre-tax or after-tax basis. Participation begins on the first day of work.
Life Insurance
All regular employees are provided a basic life insurance benefit of $25,000, and the Town pays the full premium cost. Coverage begins 30 days after the first day of work (e.g. work begins Jan 15, coverage begins Feb 15).
Short-term Disability Insurance
The Town pays for short-term disability insurance coverage for regular employees. Insurance payments begin on the 8th day of disability, with a maximum payment period of 26 weeks. Coverage begins 30 days after the first day of work (e.g. work begins Jan 15, coverage begins Feb 15).
Holidays
The Town follows the holiday schedule for the State of North Carolina, which currently includes 13 paid holidays per year: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving (2), and Christmas (3).
Vacation Leave
Vacation leave is earned at a rate based on length of service, beginning with a rate of 1 day per month. Leave accrues bi-weekly with the payroll process. Sick Leave

All Town employees are covered under the North Carolina Worker's Compensation Act. This act covers those employees who suffer injuries as a result of an accident while performing duties. It will pay medical expenses and a portion of the employee's salary if the individual is out of work as a result of a work-related disability.

Town employees are members of the Social Security System. Each employee contributes 6.2% of their annual salary, and the Town contributes the same amount. Social Security benefits include retirement and disability payments and survivor's insurance.

Tuition Assistance
