Position Summary:
The Assistant in Training – Golf Course Laborer is an entry-level position designed for individuals interested in learning the skills and knowledge required for a career in golf course maintenance. The role involves performing routine groundskeeping tasks while working under the direct supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent. As an Assistant in Training, this position provides hands-on experience and training in various aspects of golf course maintenance, including turf management, irrigation, landscape upkeep, and equipment operation and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Turf Maintenance: Assist in mowing fairways, greens, roughs, and tees. Learn the proper techniques for maintaining different turfgrass types.
- Irrigation and Watering: Help with the setup, monitoring, and maintenance of the irrigation system. Learn to identify irrigation issues like leaks and water distribution problems.
- Bunker Maintenance: Assist with the raking, leveling, and sand replacement in bunkers to maintain consistent play.
- Course Setup: Assist in setting up the golf course for daily play, including placing tee markers, flags, and checking for any hazards or course issues.
- General Groundskeeping: Help with cleaning and removing debris, leaves, and litter from the course to keep it safe and presentable.
- Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain a variety of grounds maintenance equipment, including mowers, blowers, and hand tools, under supervision. Learn to properly maintain and troubleshoot machinery.
- Fertilization and Pest Control: Assist in applying fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, following safety guidelines and proper procedures.
- Safety Procedures: Learn and adhere to safety guidelines and protocols while operating equipment, handling chemicals, and performing physical tasks.
Qualifications:Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- No prior experience required, but an interest in landscaping, horticulture, or turf management is beneficial.
Skills & Abilities:
- Willingness to learn and develop skills in golf course maintenance.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Basic knowledge of landscaping, turf care, or irrigation is a plus, but not necessary.
- Strong physical stamina, with the ability to perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and a positive attitude toward learning.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of course quality.
Licenses/Certifications:
- A valid driver’s license
- Pesticide applicator license or certification may be required after some training, depending on the role's responsibilities.
Working Conditions:
- The role is primarily outdoors, with exposure to various weather conditions.
- Early morning, weekend, and holiday work may be required based on the golf course’s needs.
- May require working with chemicals and fertilizers, following proper safety protocols.
