Position Summary:
The Associate Director of Career Advising plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of medical students, providing expert career guidance and personalized support to empower them throughout their medical journey. Collaborating with the Director of Career and Academic Advising, academic advisors, and clinical faculty, this role focuses on helping students uncover their career passions, navigate residency applications, and achieve success in the Match process. Leveraging AAMC’s Careers in Medicine (CiM) tools, the Associate Director equips students with insights into the residency landscape, builds strategies for professional growth, and ensures they are fully prepared to thrive in their chosen specialties. This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students' lives while fostering their professional development.
Essential Functions:
- Collaborate with faculty and advisors to guide medical students in career exploration, residency options, and aligning goals with strengths.
- Support clinical faculty in advising students and assisting fourth-year students with residency applications.
- Train academic advisors on career advising steps to effectively refer students to appropriate resources.
- Use AAMC’s Careers in Medicine (CiM) tools to help students explore specialties and prepare for residency.
- Assist students in assessing strengths, competencies, and growth areas for informed career decisions.
- Develop and deliver workshops on career exploration, CV/resume writing, interview prep, and networking.
- Advise on the residency application process, including ERAS, personal statements, CVs, and recommendations.
- Conduct mock interviews, dress rehearsals, and communication strategies for residency interviews.
- Monitor student progress through the Match process, offering guidance and support before, during, and after Match Day.
- Collaborate with advisors, faculty, and staff to provide holistic career development support.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in career counseling, higher education administration, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in medical career advising, residency application advising, or student affairs in a medical school environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with the AAMC’s Careers in Medicine (CiM) resources, ERAS, and the residency matching process.
- Experience advising students through the residency application cycle.
- Experience in student recruitment, admissions, or residency program administration.
- An understanding of medical school curricula and student development in an academic setting.
