We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Plant Nursery Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our plant nursery. The ideal candidate will have experience in horticulture, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to manage a team. As the Plant Nursery Manager, you will ensure the health and quality of plants, manage inventory, provide customer service, and lead the nursery team to deliver outstanding results.
Key Responsibilities:
Nursery Operations Management:
- Oversee the daily operations of the nursery, including plant care, propagation, watering, pest management, and overall plant health.
- Ensure a clean, safe, and well-organized environment for both plants and customers.
- Manage inventory of plants, seeds, soil, fertilizers, tools, and other supplies.
- Implement effective greenhouse, outdoor, and indoor plant care techniques to maximize plant health and growth.
- Work with landscaping crews to pull the correct plants for landscape jobs and update inventory reports subsequently.
Team Leadership & Staff Management:
- Lead and supervise a team of nursery staff
- Provide training on plant care, nursery operations, safety protocols, and customer service standards.
- Monitor Nursery Staff performance and report to management
Customer Service & Sales:
- Engage with customers, answer plant-related inquiries, and provide knowledgeable advice on plant selection, care, and maintenance.
- Ensure a high standard of customer service, ensuring customers have a positive experience at the nursery.
Inventory & Stock Control:
- Monitor plant inventory levels, assess plant health, and ensure timely restocking of products.
- Organize seasonal plant rotation to ensure fresh stock is available and attractive to customers.
Maintenance & Equipment Care:
- Maintain greenhouse and outdoor plant areas, ensuring proper irrigation, lighting, temperature control, and pest management.
- Ensure all equipment and tools are regularly maintained and in good working order.
- Oversee the maintenance of the nursery facilities, including fences, pathways, and storage areas.
Health & Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to all local and federal regulations concerning plant care, pesticide use, and employee safety.
- Ensure compliance with environmental standards and sustainability practices in plant care and nursery operations.
Qualifications:
Education
- A degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or related field is preferred. Equivalent experience in plant care and nursery management may be considered.
Experience:
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a horticultural or plant nursery setting, with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
- Strong background in plant identification, care, and propagation.
- Previous experience in customer service and retail sales is a plus.
- Equipment operation know-how i.e. skid loader, bucket tractor and telehandler.
Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong plant knowledge, including common species, pests, diseases, and growth cycles.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills, including inventory management software (Rapid Garden POS experience a plus) and Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks, including planting, digging, and watering plants.
- Comfortable working in varying weather conditions.
