Summary: 

Verifies conformance of machined parts, workpieces, tools, machines, assemblies, and finished products to specifications required in accordance with inspection procedures to ensure unit conforms to specifications or to determine the cause of unit failure.   Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, testing parts, machines, assemblies, and finished product, comparing results of the test to the product or machine specification, determining cause of unit failure, and communicates with others about rework.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications and in accordance with inspection procedures via first and last part piece inspections and enters required data into computer;
  • Reads test schedules, work orders, test manuals, performance specifications, blueprints and schematics to determine testing procedures and equipment to be used;
  • May perform a variety of electronic, mechanical and electromechanical tests on materials, parts and assemblies to ensure unit conforms to specifications or to determine cause of unit failure;
  • May test functional performance of systems, subassemblies/assemblies, under specified conditions and according to predetermined standards;
  • Stops production of nonconforming product, notifies appropriate personnel of problem and assists with corrective action;
  • Compares test results with specifications and may record test data and/or plot test results on graph;
  • May analyze test results on defective units to determine cause of failure and rework potential;
  • Confers with department supervisor, manufacturing managers, engineers and/or production personnel in an effort to resolve identified problems;
  • May explain and demonstrate testing procedures to other workers;
  • Verifies dimensions of machined parts using appropriate available gauge(s) (e.g. caliper, micrometer, bore gauge, grove gauge, etc.);
  • May maintain specific part approval documentation (control plans, FMEA, ISIR, Capabilities studies, etc.);
  • May communicate with customers about part requirements and/ or to resolve quality issues;
  • May maintain DMR process and communication with suppliers to resolve material rejections;
  • May maintain calibration system, and gather and perform in-house calibrations according to documented procedure;
  • May document and input non-conforming information into production jobs;
  • May perform in-process inspections, including oil cleanliness monitoring;
  • May maintain documentation specific to non-conforming product and include disposition of product in timely manner;
  • May coordinate rework with appropriate manufacturing departments and supervisors;
  • Uses available computer hardware/software as tools for performing calibrations, tracking job schedules, etc;
  • May devise or setup test equipment used to evaluate product performance;
  • May calibrate test instruments according to specifications;
  • May train employees;
  • Practices good work habits including, but not limited to, being productive and efficient, staying busy by seeing work, being dependable, clean and organized in work area;

  • Takes ownership in work to ensure that issues are resolved in a timely manner;
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of algebra, geometry and shop math, including practical application of fractions, percentages, ratio & proportion, practical algebra, geometric construction and essentials of trigonometry;
  • Reads/Interprets prints and schematics (which are drawn according to the guidelines of ANSI Y14.5);
  • Demonstrates ability to take measurements and verify conformance to the print;
  • Has a mechanical aptitude, including a basic understanding of the various types of tools used in the machining process;
  • Communicates (speaks, understands and writes reports using acceptable format and sentence and paragraph structure) in English;
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate orally in a clear and positive manner;
  • Demonstrates ability to generate and maintain accurate and concise written records ;
  • Manages time effectively.
