Position Summary
The SummerWorks Camp Counselor supervises children, ensuring a safe, engaging, and supportive environment while communicating with the leadership team. Counselors lead activities, foster positive camper relationships, assist with conflict resolution, and ensure smooth transitions. Responsibilities include setting up and cleaning activity spaces, monitoring safety, and responding to emergencies. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic, flexible, and have experience working with children or as a camp counselor, strong communication skills, and a teamwork mindset.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Child Care
- Ensure a safe and supportive environment by actively supervising children at all times
- Engage with campers through indoor and outdoor play while maintaining awareness of the entire group
- Respond to children's needs with patience and understanding, recognizing them as individuals
- Assist with conflict resolution and provide support when challenges arise
- Facilitate smooth transitions between activities, including check-in, check-out, and movement between spaces
Communication
- Learn and use the names of children, parents, caregivers, and staff to foster a welcoming environment
- Communicate important updates about activities, schedules, and concerns to fellow staff and the leadership team
- Inform the Director of SummerWorks promptly about any questions, concerns, or messages from parents, students, or staff
- Handle difficult situations with professionalism and composure
Professionalism
- Become familiar with camp policies, procedures, and staff expectations
- Arrive on time and dressed appropriately to engage with and care for children
Additional Responsibilities
- Set up, maintain, and clean activity spaces for both indoor and outdoor play
- Respond to emergencies calmly and professionally
Skills and Requirements
- Prior experience working with children ages four to thirteen
- Flexible, caring, enthusiastic disposition
- CPR certification required (training provided)
- Good cheer, humor, and warmth, balanced with professionalism and maturity
- Ability to supervise large groups of children daily
- An openness to making mistakes and trying new things
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to deal with emergencies

- Work comfortably and effectively in outdoor environments, including direct sunlight and varying temperatures
- Supervision of pool activities is a component of this role, which may include entering the pool periodically. However, reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with specific needs or limitations that prevent them from entering the water
- Move easily around classrooms, the Rowland Hall McCarthey campus, and off-site locations for field trips to support various activities
- Contribute in an organized and productive manner as a team member of the SummerWorks program
- Lift up to 10 lbs of boxes to prepare/clean up from activities
- communicate appropriately and effectively with constituents, including students, families, and colleagues
Additional Information
This is a seasonal, non-exempt position. SummerWorks has mandatory paid staff training on June 5, 6, & 7, 2025. Our Camp season begins on Monday, June 9, 2025, and ends on Friday, August 8, 2025; camp staff work 8:10 am - 4 pm daily. There will be no camp on June 19, July 4, and July 24 & 25. CPR and First Aid certification is required. SummerWorks offers CPR and First Aid training prior to the start of camp.
