Position Summary
SummerWorks substitute counselors provide essential support during staff absences, whether planned or unplanned. While a schedule is created prior to the start of camp by the Director of SummerWorks, substitute counselors may be asked about their availability on shorter notice. In this role, counselors supervise and guide campers' learning, personal growth, and skill development through planning, teaching, and coordinating age-appropriate activities. As primary caregivers for the campers on the days they work, substitute counselors prioritize safety, fun, and learning. This part-time position is available Monday through Friday, from 8:10 AM to 4:00 PM.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Child Care Skills
- Ensures a safe environment for all children, closely monitoring the group at all times
- Involves self positively with children through indoor and outdoor play and conversation while still maintaining an awareness of the entire group
- Responds to the range of children’s needs with acceptance and understanding and relates to children as individuals
- Assists children in conflict resolution and steps in to provide support when needed
- Facilitates smooth transitions for the children as they move from indoor to outdoor play, are checked in/out for the day, etc.
Communication Skills
- Learn and use names of children, parents, caregivers, employees
- Uses a warm and welcoming disposition when communicating with community members
- Communicate to other staff and the leadership team important information and changes in activities, scheduling, problems, etc. Works well as a member of the team
- Informs the Director in a clear and timely manner regarding any questions, concerns, or messages from parents, students, teachers, or other administrators
- Addresses difficult situations with calm, appropriate attention
Professionalism
- Familiarizes self with camp policies, campers, and other staff
- Consistently arrives on time for scheduled shifts, dressed appropriately for work of caring for and engaging with young children
Additional Duties
- Sets up, manages, and cleans up materials used for both indoor and outdoor play and exploration
- Handles emergencies with calm, consistent, and professional behavior
Skills and Requirements
- Flexible, caring, enthusiastic disposition
- Good cheer, humor, and warmth, balanced with professionalism and maturity
- Prior experience working with children ages three to fourteen
- CPR certification required (training provided)
- Ability to supervise large groups of children daily
- An openness to making mistakes and trying new things
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to deal with emergencies

- Work comfortably and effectively in outdoor environments, including direct sunlight and varying temperatures
- Supervision of pool activities is a component of this role, which may include entering the pool periodically. However, reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with specific needs or limitations that prevent them from entering the water
- Move easily around classrooms, the Rowland Hall McCarthey campus, and off-site locations for field trips to support various activities
- Contribute in an organized and productive manner as a team member of the SummerWorks program
- Lift up to 10 lbs of boxes to prepare/clean up from activities
- communicate appropriately and effectively with constituents, including students, families, and colleagues
Additional Information
This is a seasonal, non-exempt position. SummerWorks has mandatory paid staff training on June 5, 6, & 7, 2025. Our Camp season begins on Monday, June 9, 2025, and ends on Friday, August 8; the program runs 8:10 am - 4:00 pm daily, substitute counselors will work within that time frame. Extended Day shifts may also be available (4:00-5:30 pm).There will be no camp on June 19, July 4, and July 24 & 25. CPR and First Aid certification is required. SummerWorks offers CPR and First Aid training prior to the start of camp.
