Position Summary
The SummerWorks Counselor in Training (CIT) program is an opportunity for motivated and enthusiastic individuals to participate, observe, and gain the necessary skills to one day be the best possible future camp staff. This program is designed for professional growth, with the experience being as rewarding as the effort invested. Throughout the program, CITs are mentored by seasoned camp staff who will help them grow and succeed, while allowing them to take on increasing levels of responsibility. CITs also have the chance to meet new friends, create lasting memories, and be part of a close-knit, supportive team.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Child Care Skills
- Ensure a safe environment for all children, closely monitoring the group at all times
- Involve self positively with children through indoor and outdoor play and conversation while still maintaining an awareness of the entire group
- Respond to the range of children’s needs with acceptance and understanding and relates to children as individuals
- Assist children in conflict resolution and steps in to provide support when needed
- Facilitate smooth transitions for the children as they move from indoor to outdoor play, are checked in/out for the day, etc.
Communication Skills
- Learn and use names of children, parents, caregivers, employees
- Use a warm and welcoming disposition when communicating with community members
- Communicate to other staff and the leadership team important information and changes in activities, scheduling, problems, etc. Work positively as a team member
- Address difficult situations with a calm and appropriate manner
Professionalism
- Familiarize self with camp policies, campers, and other staff
- Consistently arrives on time, dressed appropriately for work of caring for and engaging with young children
Additional Duties
- Set up, manage, and clean up materials and spaces used for both indoor and outdoor play and exploration.
Skills and Requirements
- The CIT role is for rising ninth or tenth graders
- Display professionalism and high integrity to be a good role model for children
- Flexible, caring, enthusiastic disposition

- Work comfortably and effectively in outdoor environments, including direct sunlight and varying temperatures
- Move easily around classrooms and the Rowland Hall McCarthey campus to support various activities
- Contribute in an organized and productive manner as a team member of the SummerWorks program
- Lift up to 10 lbs of boxes to prepare/clean up from activities
- Communicate appropriately and effectively with constituents, including students, families, and colleagues
Additional Information
This is a seasonal, non-exempt position. Due to the limited number of openings, only four candidates will be selected for this position. SummerWorks has mandatory paid staff training on June 5, 6, & 7, 2025. Our Camp season begins on Monday, June 9, 2025, and ends on Friday, August 8; CITs will work 4 hours a day, 4 weeks of the summer. CITs can coordinate with the Director of SummerWorks to find a schedule that best works with them and their families. There will be no camp on June 19, July 4, and July 24 & 25.
