We are looking for a dynamic clinical veterinarian with experience in Non-Human Primates that brings excellent communication, a willingness to learn, a focus on compliance, and a knowledge of and priority for animal health and welfare. All of this in our AAALAC accredited, PHS assured, and CDC registered facility.

The clinical veterinarian will contribute to the team by :

  • Providing medical and surgical care for laboratory animals to ensure adequate and humane veterinary support.
  • Performing physical, ophthalmic, and other needed exams on laboratory animals.
  • Providing expertise on animal health, biology, physiology, and research methodology to staff scientists and technicians and provide training to staff when needed.
  • Assisting the site supervisor to ensure that the policies and practices regarding animal care and welfare are in compliance and contain relevant regulations.
  • Reporting all animal care concerns and becoming involved in the resolution.
  • Work with non-human primates in a fast-paced environment
  • Hone your clinical, surgical, and regulatory veterinary skills with a team

Responsibilities :

  • Perform preventative medicine including but not limited to : quarantine procedures, dental procedures, review of health records and physiological blood data values of colony animals, review of and modification of clinical treatment.
  • Develop and implement plans for preventative medicine including review of present preventative plans and modification of preventative plans or protocols based on clinical successful / non-successful clinical outcomes.
  • Participate in animal health maintenance including surveillance of colony animal health in conjunction with other veterinary clinical staff and colony staff, infectious disease testing, routine physical exams, and bio-sample analysis for colony animals, dental health examination.
  • Provide care to sick or injured animals including the provision of follow-up care and release from clinical treatment.
  • Keep continuous surveillance for clinical signs of disease or injury
  • Perform radiology, ultrasound, and surgical procedures
  • Determine and direct use of anesthetic and analgesic agents
  • Perform sedation and anesthesia with controlled drugs
  • Provide guidance to surgical support staff on instrumentation, sanitation practices, and surgical suite maintenance.
  • Provide patient per-operative anesthesia and monitoring as needed
  • Provide and oversee post-operative intensive care, including the use of sedatives, analgesics, and antibiotics
  • Stay current on all required training
  • Maintain compliance with all USDA, PHS, AAALAC, policies, and procedures
  • Provide direct monitoring of clinical cases.
  • Provide supervision of veterinary clinical staff members as needed
  • Ideally, the clinical veterinarian will have :

  • Clinical experience, however, we will train the right candidate
  • Experience working with non-human primates is desirable but not required, However, the desire to work with NHPs is a prerequisite.
  • Active DEA registration
  • Ability to gain a Florida DVM license or commitment to obtain within 60 days of offer
  • Willingness to work with laboratory animals in a research / laboratory setting.
