Senior Clinical Veterinarian

Hello there and thank you for checking out the job description. We are looking for a dynamic, energetic, clinical veterinarian to help grow, help improve and help manage the veterinary program for a primate breeding facility. We are looking for someone who is able to think on their feet, manage clinical cases, and help improve the veterinary program overall as we continue to grow. Ideally, we are looking for an individual with NHP breeding experience but what is important is an individual who is interested in taking ownership of a veterinary lab animal program and help to transform this into a 5-star program. This is always hard to do if you do not have the support of senior management. In this instance, it is absolutely there and the health and welfare of the animals come first.

The Clinical Veterinarian will contribute to the team by :

  • Providing medical and surgical care for laboratory animals to ensure adequate and humane veterinary support.
  • Performing physical, ophthalmic, and other needed exams on laboratory animals.
  • Providing expertise on animal health, biology, physiology, and research methodology to staff scientists and technicians and provide training to staff when needed.
  • Assisting the site supervisor to ensure that the policies and practices regarding animal care and welfare are in compliance and contain relevant regulations.
  • Reporting all animal care concerns and becoming involved in the resolution.
  • Work with non-human primates in a fast-paced environment
  • Hone your clinical, surgical, and regulatory veterinary skills with a team

As a Senior Clinical Veterinarian your responsibilities will include :

  • Managing Clinical Cases
  • Managing the Breeding Colony
  • Reducing Morbidity and Mortality rates.
  • Input on growth designs
  • Husbandry staff training
  • Veterinary staff training- both veterinarians and supporting staff
  • Creation, upkeep and revamping of SOPs
  • Reporting all animal care concerns and becoming involved in the resolution
  • Assisting the site supervisor to ensure that the policies and procedures regarding animal care and welfare are in compliance and contain relevant regulations
  • Performing physical, ophthalmic, and other needed exams on NHPs
  • Providing medical and surgical care for the animals to ensure adequate and humane veterinary support.
  • Ensuring animal physiological welfare including environmental enrichment, pairing, and group formation of animals
  • In charge of animal pairing and group formation. This includes changes in group make-up (removing or adding animals, group reformation) as necessary to ensure animal compatibility and mental well being as well as to address or prevent stress-related illnesses or disorder (sterotypical behavior, SIB, overgrooming, diarrhea)
  • Ensure that the minimum environmental enrichment requirement described in the most current edition of the Handbook of Laboratory Animal Management and Welfare for Animals is met for all animals. Expand the enrichment program to address the needs of both long-term and short-term facility residents to encourage good health and mental well-being for all animals.
  • Ensure that behavioral assessments are performed prior to euthanasia in potentially problematic cases
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Ideally, the clinical veterinarian will have :

  • Clinical experience, however, we will train the right candidate
  • Experience in laboratory animal medicine or emergency veterinary experience
  • Experience working with non-human primates is desirable but not required, However, the desire to work with NHPs is a prerequisite.
  • Active DEA registration
  • Ability to gain a Florida DVM license or commitment to obtain within 60 days of offer
  • If your compensation planning software is too rigid to deploy winning incentive strategies, it’s time to find an adaptable solution. Compensation Planning
