What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Mechanical Engineer position at Ruby Robotics?
Senior or Staff Mechanical Design Engineer: Ruby Robotics
About Us: Ruby Robotics is advancing precision oncology with robotics and artificial intelligence solutions. Started by Stanford/MIT alumni who previously founded 3 successful medical device companies, our first product uses a custom-built instrument and AI to autonomously prepare, image and analyze tissues during biopsy procedures. We are funded by healthcare and deep tech VCs that share our goal of offering impactful solutions to cancer patient care.
About This Opportunity: We are looking for a senior or staff mechanical design engineer to advance the development of our novel tissue processing and analytics instruments and consumable. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of designing precision electromechanical systems for medical applications from concept stage to commercialization. This position is on-site at our facility in San Carlos, CA. We are looking for a full time hire and are open to this being a consulting position as well.
Responsibilities:
- Drive the mechanical design and assembly of novel biomedical instrumentation integrating motion controls, sensing, fluidics, optics and consumable
- Ideate novel system designs and develop/improve existing prototypes and fixtures
- Develop mechanical assemblies and source components with consideration for performance, manufacturability, and cost
- Document mechanical designs to support Ruby’s quality system and transfer to manufacturing including drawings and assembly
- Create and implement procedures and protocols for instrument testing
- Collaborate with vendors, suppliers, and manufacturing personnel through prototyping, DFM, design transfer and launch
- Work closely with a multidisciplinary engineering team and company leadership to deliver on key technical milestones
Minimum Qualifications:
- Degree in mechanical engineering or related field
- 5 years of experience (Staff ME) or 3 years of experience (Sr. ME) designing, building, and testing precision electromechanical systems for medical robotics, medical device, or diagnostic equipment applications
- Expert proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks)
- Demonstrated ability to advance the mechanical design of complex medical systems from early prototype to manufacturing and commercialization
- Experience across high-volume disposables/plastics and capital equipment
- Rapid prototyping capability complemented with small batch manufacturing experience
