We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Building Automation Estimator to join our team. This role is crucial in ensuring accurate project cost estimation and competitive bids, contributing to the successful execution of our projects. This position can be stationed at any GEM Service office location (Central Ohio, Walbridge, Cleveland, Plymouth, MI).
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Project Analysis
- Review project specifications, drawings, and contract documents to understand requirements.
- Collaborate with engineers and project managers to clarify project scope and objectives.
- Investigate previously installed control systems in a building for retrofit applications
- Cost Estimation
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for building automation systems, including HVAC controls, lighting, security, and energy management systems.
- Analyze material, labor, equipment, and overhead costs to develop comprehensive estimates.
- Bid Preparation
- Develop and submit competitive bids for projects, ensuring compliance with client specifications and deadlines.
- Participate in bid presentations and discussions with clients and stakeholders.
- Supplier and Vendor Coordination
- Communicate with suppliers and vendors to obtain pricing for materials and equipment.
- Evaluate vendor proposals and integrate them into estimates.
- Market Research
- Stay informed about industry trends, technologies, and pricing to ensure accurate estimates.
- Conduct competitive analysis to understand market conditions.
- Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of estimates, bids, and project changes for future reference.
- Prepare and submit reports on estimating activities and results.
- Collaboration
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and field personnel to ensure seamless project execution.
- Assist in project reviews and value engineering to optimize costs and efficiency.
- Support Account Managers in building, estimating, and presenting control project proposals to customers
SKILLS
- Familiar with integration concepts and platforms such as BACnet systems.
- Good knowledge of optimization and energy management strategy for BAS system.
- Good understanding of HVAC systems/controls, and functions of building automation systems.
- Thorough understanding of control theory and control concepts.
- Ability to read blueprints and interpret specifications.
- Proven attention to detail and ability to work independently and in a team.
- Possesses a strong environmental, health and safety mindset.
- Strong client-service orientation along with a high sense of urgency.
- Effective communication skills for the purpose of data relay, exchange, feedback, and clarification.
- Must be willing to wear Personal Protective Equipment when on job site walks where it is required.
- Ability to analyze complex information and prepare detailed estimates.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with clients, vendors, and team members.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- 5-10 years of proven work experience in design, implementation, and installation of building controls systems
- Experience with computers, computer networks and internet protocols
- Familiarity with estimating software and tools, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Competency in Bidtracer is a plus.
- Previous experience in estimating or project management within the building automation or construction industry of 5 years.
- A degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is beneficial but not required.
