Title: Medical Laboratory Supervisor

Supervises: Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician, Laboratory Technician/MA, Phlebotomist
Status: Full-Time / Exempt
Position Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Supervisor oversees all laboratory employees and activities and will follow both the Medical Technologist (MT) and Phlebotomist Job Descriptions. Compliance with rules and regulations of all applicable federal, state and local laws as well as FMS and ruralMED Management Resources policies, standards and best practices is a condition of employment.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from an accredited college or university
- Must have at least two years of experience as a Laboratory Technologist with a Bachelor’s Degree in Laboratory Science - See COLA personnel requirements for further details
Licenses/Certifications Required:
- MT (ASCP), MT (AMT), CLS (ASCP), MLS (ASCP) or MT (HEW)
- Current BLS/CPR certification.
General Requirements/Job Duties:
The Medical Laboratory Supervisor must have the skills, ability and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Lab employee schedule: identifies schedule, keeps track of daily hours, keeps track of PTO, reviews and approves timecards – all functions done in cooperation with Human Resources
- Review all workload recording data making observations and recommendations accordingly
- Ensure all laboratory testing is performed and reported in an accurate and timely manner
- Review all quality control data watching for shifts and trends, making any necessary adjustments or corrective actions
- Keep all QC programs and data up to date and review comparison reports on a regular basis
- Routine purchasing lab supplies and documenting invoices with department usage and date of arrival. Ensures ample inventory of reagent and supplies to not interfere with patient testing.
- Oversight of maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and linearity of all lab instrumentation and equipment
- Assure that all lab equipment is operating reliably and informs lab employees of necessary updates that need to be made with new lab equipment
- Facilitate laboratory meetings at least every other month to discuss any new ideas or changes in laboratory operations
- Communicate all new policies or policy changes or other new information to other clinic employees
- Act in a receptive manner to suggestions from lab employees and also available to discuss any problems, questions, or suggestions with laboratory personnel
- Enroll in proficiency testing program for monitoring all required analytes
- Conduct annual evaluations of lab employees
- New laboratory staff hired, perform personnel and performance review after three month probationary period, six month for Laboratory Technologist (COLA requirement), and annually thereafter
- Facilitate competency assessment annually for all techs in all areas of performance
- Able to perform all Phlebotomist’s and Medical Technologist (MT) duties outlined in each job description
- Maintain lab by keeping current with all COLA regulations (conducts monthly Quality Assessments, documenting of all process, keeping records for required amount of time, proof of proficiency testing and follow-up, etc.)
- Keep Quality Assurance program up to date
- Work closely with Laboratory Director to provide clear communication with lab issues
- Prepare monthly agenda for physician meeting to update on status of the lab
- Track all leases and contracts with close attention to renewal when required, keeping current on maintenance
- Oversee continuing education opportunities for lab staff and documentation
- Understand LIS and EMR functions
- Work with reference lab to solve problems and ensure good patient care
- Review procedure manuals, keeping manuals current and signed by director annually
- Work with other departments in the clinic to provide the best patient care possible
- Remain active in clinic communication and serves wherever requested by administration
- Round on Diagnostics staff and collaborates with Medical Clinic Manager to create solutions to identified needs
- Provide ongoing feedback and coaching to Diagnostics staff
- Assist with hiring and orientation of Diagnostics staff
- Assist with identifying/requesting needs for annual budget
