Position Overview:
The Assistant Backpack Coordinator will support the coordination and operation of the RCS Backpack Program, which provides weekend meals to over 1,000 food-insecure students in Rutherford County Schools. This position works closely with the Backpack Coordinator, volunteers, school staff, and community partners to ensure efficient food distribution, inventory management, and program sustainability. Additionally, the Assistant Backpack Coordinator will oversee the program’s social media presence to engage the community, increase awareness, and support fundraising efforts.
Key Responsibilities:

Program Coordination & Logistics
- Assist with the weekly packing and distribution of food bags to participating schools.
- Help manage food inventory, ensuring items are stocked, organized, and rotated properly.
- Coordinate with school contacts to verify student participation and adjust food bag counts as needed.
- Ensure food deliveries and pick-ups are scheduled and completed on time.

Volunteer Coordination
- Assist in recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers for packing and delivery.
- Ensure that all volunteers follow food safety and program guidelines.
- Maintain a positive and organized working environment for volunteers.

Community & Donor Engagement
- Support fundraising and food drive efforts by working with local businesses, churches, and community groups.
- Assist with promotional activities and awareness campaigns for the program.
- Provide updates and reports to donors, sponsors, and community partners when needed.

Social Media & Marketing
- Manage the Backpack Program’s social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to increase engagement and community awareness.
- Create and post regular content, including updates, volunteer spotlights, success stories, and event promotions.
- Respond to messages, comments, and inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Work with the RCS Education Foundation to align social media strategy with broader marketing efforts.

Administrative & Reporting Tasks
- Maintain records of food inventory, student participation, and program impact.
- Assist with grant reporting and fundraising documentation.
- Ensure compliance with food safety standards and program policies.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Passion for helping children and addressing food insecurity.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience managing social media accounts for organizations preferred.
- Ability to lift and transport food supplies (up to 30 lbs).
- Experience working with volunteers or community programs preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and basic record-keeping.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree and licensed by the state of North Carolina.
