This position is located in the Public Health Laboratory within the Support Division/ Specimen Management .
Perform daily temperature checks on all shippers received with specimens for testing in Diagnostic Serology and Analytical Chemistry Departments Tuesday thru Saturday. Ensure that all specimen temperatures meet PHL Standardized Temperature Definitions. Perform accessioning of specimens, including categorization and number assignments, centrifuging and racking by following established bloodborne pathogens safety protocol.
Reject specimens based on blood borne pathogens safety protocol established criteria. Keys and verifies patient demographics in the Open Elis (LIMS) database. Follows laboratory procedures for correction of incomplete or invalid data. Keys and verifies newborn patient demographics in the Specimen Gate/Screening Center (LIMS) database. Follows laboratory procedures for correction of incomplete or invalid data. Responds to telephone and mail inquiries for laboratory test information.
Maintains a log of requests for results. Perform quality control checks on all centrifuges and the eyewash. Notifies the supervisor of any problems. Performs basic clean-up and disposal of infectious and medical waste in compliance with OSHA regulations and the Laboratory Exposure Control Plan. Perform other duties as required.
The position requires mandatory Saturdays and state observed holidays for specimen receipt and to provide data entry support to the Newborn Screening Department. Staff is also required to report during times of inclement weather and when emergency events occur.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements:A high school diploma and work experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting, in a health care setting or in a general maintenance or machine shop environment. A bachelor's degree in a related scientific discipline may be substituted for the required work experience.
Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
