Saber Power Services is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Engineer with a focus on Relay Settings and Development to join our engineering team. Successful candidates may be placed in Engineer I - III titles commiserate with applicant experience.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Electrical Engineer – Relay Settings & Development specialty will be responsible for the design, configuration, and setting of protective relays for substation projects. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, project coordination skills, and a deep understanding of electrical systems protection. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of professional experience in relay settings and development within the substation design field. Successful candidates may be place in Engineer I – III titles commiserate with technical knowledge and expertise.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Relay Settings & Configuration:
- Develop and apply protective relay settings for power systems, ensuring protection coordination, reliability, and performance of electrical equipment within substations.
- Work with protection engineers and design teams to tailor relay settings for specific project requirements and ensure compliance with industry standards and client specifications.
- May be called upon to perform protection system studies (short circuit, coordination, load flow, etc.) to define proper relay settings for overcurrent, distance, differential, and other protection schemes.
- System Analysis & Studies:
- Conduct power system analysis and simulations using industry-standard software to determine proper relay settings and protection schemes.
- Participate in coordination studies, including fault analysis, load flow, and system stability assessments including transmission short-circuit analysis.
- Design Support & Documentation:
- Assist in the preparation of technical documents, reports, and specifications related to relay protection systems.
- Provide input for the development of protection schemes, control circuits, and communication protocols.
- Review and verify relay protection schemes and related documentation as part of the substation design process.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Coordinate with the design, procurement, and construction teams to ensure the accurate implementation of relay protection systems.
- Support project teams in identifying and resolving issues during the design and commissioning phases.
- Communicate with clients and vendors to resolve technical issues related to relay settings and protection systems.
- Testing & Commissioning:
- Support the commissioning and testing of protection systems in the field, ensuring that relay settings function as expected.
- Troubleshoot and provide technical guidance during system testing and commissioning activities.
- This role requires a high degree of attention to detail and the ability to prioritize to efficiently manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
- Must be able to work under pressure while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- Perform other job-related duties as requested by management.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field, from an ABET accredited program
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in substation design, and protective relay development
- Proficiency in relay setting calculations and configuration for protection schemes (e.g., overcurrent, differential, distance, etc.
- Familiarity with industry-standard relay protection software (do you want examples here?)
- Experience with power system analysis tools such as ETAP, SKM, DIGSILENT, Aspen Oneliner or similar
- Knowledge of IEC/IEEE standards and guidelines related to substation protection and relay settings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and interacting with internal teams and clients
- Ability to analyze complex problems and implement effective solutions in a fast-paced work environment
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Highly organized with the ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines
- Capable of working in a high-volume and high-urgency environment
