Job Summary

The School Custodian fulfills the mission of the Catholic school by assisting others as assigned and working with the principal and office staff in particular ways as outlined in the job description. This position reports to and is evaluated by the principal in consultation with the other departments with which the School Custodian works.

Ministerial Character

Catholic schools in the Diocese of Austin are canonically obedient to the Bishop and assist him in fulfilling his ministry and canonical obligations. Pastors, presidents, and principals serve as leaders of the schools to make Christ's mission present and enduring in the schools. In order to fulfill Christ's mission, the school leaders employ suitable, chosen collaborators, sharing with them Christ's mission and entrusting to them various responsibilities.

Positions employed in this School help extend the ministry of the School leaders in particular ways as outlined in the job description. The employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the School leaders in the performance of their ministry and, therefore, engages in ministry for the Church.

Essential Duties

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school.
  • Acts as a witness to the Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed.
  • Support and adhere to the Standards of Conduct and policies and procedures of the school.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters.
  • Ability to follow directions and handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, and colleagues in a school setting.
  • Ability to problem solve and prioritize duties.
  • Collaborate with others to enhance the school environment.
  • Maintains a work schedule that maximizes availability to the school, students, and staff.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits.
  • All other duties as assigned by the principal such, but not limited to, the ones below:


School:

  • Sweep the floors throughout the school daily.
  • Mop the entire cafeteria dining area at least 3 times a week and spot mop daily, as needed.
  • Mop the hallway at least twice a week and spot mop daily, as needed.
  • Clean restrooms daily (sinks, toilets, mirrors, trash, sweep, mop, and any other).
  • Clean classroom sinks, mirrors, and the area around them at least once a week.
  • Clean the water fountain in the school hallway daily.
  • Fill paper towel, soap, and toilet paper dispensers in bathrooms and classrooms, as needed.
  • Dust window sills, door frames, countertops in rooms, as needed.
  • Sweep all outside entrances to the school and gym/center.
  • Empty trash from the outdoor trash cans as well as trash in the school.
  • Change air fresheners in bathrooms as needed.
  • Notify the office when janitorial supplies and paper products are low.
  • All other duties as assigned by the after-school care director or the principal.
  • General cleaning and custodial duties as needed, such as: trash removal, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, etc.

Cafeteria:

  • Clean tables and chairs after morning snack - before lunch
  • Clean tables and chairs after each class from lunch
  • Assist with preparing / serving lunches, as needed
  • Supervise students when dumping trays and empty milk cartons
  • Monitor and assist with clean up when spills or accidents happen
  • Sweep the cafeteria after lunch each day
  • Spot mop the cafeteria after lunch each day
  • Replace trash bags before they get too heavy - about half full
  • Assist with the kitchen and cubby room laundry, as needed
  • Stock water, milk, and juice in cooler
  • Monitor the open / closure and temperature of the drink cooler
  • Assist with washing dishes
  • Occasionally, assist with lunch count and record keeping for lunches
  • All other duties as assigned by the cafeteria manager or the principal

Gym/Center:

  • Clean bathrooms daily (toilets, sinks, sweep, mop, refill soap and paper products).
  • Remove trash from the entire building (kitchen and gym) daily.
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum the music room once a week.
  • Vacuum the foyer and clean the glass doors and case once a week.
  • Keep school cleaning supplies and paper products stocked in girl’s bathroom closet.
  • Dust mop the bleachers and gym floor at least once a week.
  • Clean the kitchen and dining area at least once a week, but more often as needed.
  • sweep, mop, wipe tables /chairs, sinks, counters, stove and burner pans, oven, and microwave
  • All other duties as assigned by the pastor or principal

Other:

  • After School Care, as needed

  • Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Skill in critical thinking and planning

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • None required

Certifications and Training:

  • Must submit an Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) Application for Ministry within the first week of employment, participate in an EIM Basic abuse prevention training workshop within 30 days of submitting a complete Application for Ministry, and maintain EIM compliance during the entire term of employment.

Working Conditions

  • Required to work some nights and weekends
  • Required to manage high to moderate levels of stress
  • Required to work a minimum of a full school day
  • Required to work in standard school conditions

All employees must adhere to the Catholic Schools Standards of Conduct, the Diocese of Austin EIM policies, and the social, ethical, and moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church as interpreted by the Bishop of Austin.
