Position Summary
Drives heavy rolling machine to compact earth fills, subgrades, flexible base, and bituminous surface to grade specifications preparatory to construction of highways, streets, and runways: Moves levers, depresses pedals, turns handwheels, and pushes throttle to control and guide machine.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate roller to compact earth, subgrade, and sub-base asphalt surfaces in the construction of highways and streets.
- Drive machine in successive overlapping passes over surfaces to be compacted, rolling asphalt and subgrade to desired compaction and smoothness.
- Determines speed and direction of machine based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures.
- Distribute, break down, compress and give a finished surface to cooling asphalt.
- Monitors rolling temperature and works within temperature best suited for material being laid.
- Determine rolling drum mode.
- Have a thorough understanding of material thickness, type of material being laid, and material temperature for determining rolling range.
- Communicate with paving crew on any flaws in material or finished mat.
- Try to minimize roller marks.
- Keep machines clean and maintained.
- Monitor operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met.
- Keep records of material or equipment usage or problems encountered.
- Follow all safety policies and procedures
- Use PPE (Vest, hard hat, boots) safety glasses and gloves when needed.
Qualifications/Requirements:
· Must demonstrate the ability to operate the Roller Operator, excellent safety awareness, and a willingness to comply with company policy and safety standards.
· Must wear proper attire at all times including: safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes.
· Continuous mental and visual attention to safely and effectively complete work tasks.
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. It is suggested that the employee is previously conditioned to experience long amounts of time outside in the physical elements, such as heat, sun, wind, rain, etc. The employee will occasionally be exposed to dust and loud noises.

- Clear vision to read material tags and construction drawings.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

May be exposed to loud and/or constant noise and exposure to moving equipment. Working with and/or near heavy equipment and vehicle traffic. Driving a vehicle and getting on/off equipment. On occasion, work near body or water. May have occasional exposure to wildlife. May be struck by falling object, materials, debris, and tools. May work near moving trucks.
