LOCATION : Venice, CA

STATUS : Full-time, 40 hours / week, Non-Exempt

SALARY RANGE : $21.00 - $25.00 / hr

ABOUT THE ROLE

SPY’s YCES Campus Peer Navigator will conduct outreach and engage youth experiencing homelessness in SPA 5, specifically in educational settings like local community colleges including SMC and LACC. The YCES Campus Peer Navigator will educate students and schools about CES and housing resources offered, operating as the liaison between LA’s higher education system and the Homeless Services system. In addition to working a few days a week at SPY’s Access Center in Venice, this role will be co-located at local community colleges regularly. The YCES Campus Peer Navigator will also attend meetings across SPA 5 as well as attend LAHSA meetings located in DTLA.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Assist youth at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness with navigating CES and Homeless Services focusing on youth in higher education
  • Assist youth in completing the assessment that is required to enter the CES system (Next Step Tool or VI-SPDAT) and any additional paperwork needed
  • Problem solve with youth and utilize CES diversion tools when appropriate
  • Enter data into our internal databases, Civicore, and LAHSAs database, HMIS
  • Collaborate with schools to develop mechanisms to identify students at-risk or in need of support; Liaise with and provide technical assistance to WLAC and SMC faculty in submitting referrals
  • Educate partners and schools on CES and homeless services field
  • Coordinate care with appropriate school offices, attend planning and care coordination meetings
  • Outreach to other agencies and organizations about housing opportunities and educational support
  • Attend meetings on behalf of the SPA 5 YCES team
  • Provide back-up outreach and case management support to region as needed
  • Coordinate care with CES providers and SPY Case Management team to ensure proper care and follow up for youth
  • Assist in the preparation of required program reports
  • Additional ad-hoc tasks as required
  • Other duties as assigned to support the mission of the program and organization.

Requirements : WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or related field is preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in field based case management, counseling or related experience is required.
  • 1-2 years of experience providing direct services to high-risk youth including counseling and advocacy.
  • Lived experience as TAY homeless youth is a plus
  • 1-2 years of experience and comfortability accessing supportive services in higher education settings
  • 1-2 years of experience accessing social services (homeless services, DCFS, probations, DPSS, etc.) is a plus
  • Experience providing peer education and knowledge of issues relating to higher education and homelessness preferred
  • Ability to work independently without on-site supervision and learn from mistakes
  • Reliable transportation to travel between multiple sites; is punctual and organized
  • Ability to use computers including word-processing, data entry, and spreadsheet utilization
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities and sexual orientations in a multicultural environment
  • Can utilize a harm reduction, trauma- informed approach
  • Ability to work nights / weekends as needed
  • Ability to obtain First Aid / CPR certification and Employment Eligibility Verification
  • Successful completion of background (LiveScan) check
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Changes in the environment, such as the office or outdoors.
  • Physical effort / lifting, such as sedentary- up to 15-20 pounds at times.
  • SPECIAL CONDITIONS :

    Mandated Reporting Requirements : The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

    COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements : Effective August 9, 2021, the State Health Officer has mandated that all workers, paid or unpaid, in homeless services organizations must provide proof of vaccination. If eligible for a booster shot, proof of booster is also required. If not fully vaccinated, weekly COVID-19 testing is necessary depending on the program.     Driver Positions :

    Applicants are required to provide a copy of their driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles, along with a copy of their valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. Job offers are contingent upon a satisfactory driving record. Examples of an unsatisfactory driving record include :

  • Suspended or revoked license
  • Three or more moving violations in the past 36 months
  • Any violations, including drugs, alcohol, controlled substances, within the past 24 months
  • Reckless driving, including hit and runs, within the past 24 months
  • At fault accidents, resulting in fatality or serious injury, within the past 5 years

    For driver positions, driving is an essential job function and cannot be reasonably accommodated, employment may be discontinued.

    NOTE : All staff members will be considered introductory employees for the first three months of employment and will not be considered regular employees until the conclusion of this period.
