SafeHaven is seeking a Youth Mentor.
The Youth Mentor assists the youth in shelter with seeing the world outside the box and providing mentorship by developing and implementing trauma-informed youth programming that includes advocacy and recreational activities. The Youth Mentor is an advisor, coach, and advocate in helping the youth build resilience and direct them toward a successful path to adulthood. Identify and assess client strengths and challenges to coordinate and provide the best services.
This position has significant responsibilities, including acting as a positive role model, aiding in educational and personal goal attainment, assessing safety needs per Texas Family Code guidelines, and offering trauma-specific interventions. The mentor will lead educational groups promoting anti-violence mindsets, help with academic tasks, and facilitate age-appropriate life skills sessions. Ensuring youth safety during on-site and off-site activities is crucial, along with collaborating on summer programs and specific groups like the Young Men Lead initiative. The mentor is responsible for consistently maintaining records, attending program meetings, and actively engaging with volunteers. Additionally, they are responsible for creating a calming environment for the children and employing only agency-approved disciplinary methods. Additional duties may be assigned as required.

The specific qualifications for this role are:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, Education, Physical Education, or a related field. Will consider high school diploma or GED with related work experience.
- Previous experience with group games and structured activity facilitation with children is preferred.
- Sports program design, implementation and /or facilitation experience preferred.
- Must have experience working with children and be sensitive to the dynamics of childhood exposure to domestic violence.
- Must maintain structure in a crisis environment and work effectively with multiple children in a residential setting.
- Must possess knowledge of childhood developmental stages, age-appropriate activities, and trauma-informed care practices.
- Knowledge of Trust Based Relational Intervention preferred.
