JOB TITLE : Special Education Paraprofessional (classroom / one-on-one)

DEPARTMENT / BUILDING :

REPORTS TO : Building Principal / Executive Director of Special Education / Student Support

GENERAL SUMMARY :

Saginaw Public Schools Special Education Teacher Paraprofessionals must have the ability to accept supervision and direction, also the ability to work creatively and skillfully with students. The paraprofessional must have the physical stamina for lifting and movement of an ambulatory student. The Paraprofessional should exibit emotional stability and good judgement in making decisions. Paraprofessionals are responsible for assisting in the supervision and instruction of a special education classroom and / or special education student(s), under the supervision of a teacher.

Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices

Knowledge of written and verbal communication skills

Knowledge of child development and learning styles

Knowledge of age appropriate activities

Knowledge of behavior patterns and development limitations of special education students

Skilled in operating classroom equipment, including related software

Skilled in utilizing a variety of equipment used in the care and handling of students with disabilities

Skilled in accurate record keeping

Skilled in remaining composed in stressful and difficult situations.

Ability to work with students demonstrating challenging behaviors.

Ability to schedule activities and collate data

Ability to use job related equipment

Ability to adapt to changing work priorities

Ability to maintain confidentiality

Ability to work with constant interruptions

Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions

Ability to communicate effectively

Ability to work in a multi-cultural, urban setting and develop a rapport with students, staff, parents and the school community

Physical Demands - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and / or walk, sit, lift, carry, push and / or pull up to 10 lbs., stoop, kneel, crouch and / or crawl. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Adapt classroom activities, assignments and / or materials under the supervision of the teacher

Support instructional activities with students under the direction of the classroom teacher.

Provide appropriate health / hygiene related

Confer with the teacher, as requested, in evaluating student(s) progress, coordinating tests and homework assignments, and / or implementing IEP objectives

Assist in implementing behavioral plans indicated by the IEP

Instruct special education student(s) one-on-one or in small groups to assist the teacher in implementing goals for remediation of student deficiencies and ensuring student success

Monitor student's activities and behavior.

Monitor special education student(s) during lunch, recess, field trips or as designated by the teacher to ensure a safe and positive learning environment

Perform record keeping and clerical functions as needed

Assist in the feeding of assigned student(s) as needed

Report observations and incidents relating to specific students concerning unacceptable behavior

Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns

Assist other staff as required to ensure an efficient and effective learning environment

Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE :

High school graduate or equivalent

A minimum of 60 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university (or) pass the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment Test with a score of 460 or higher.

Previous experience working with special education students is preferred

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

Attend any training as mandated

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Noise level in this work environment may be moderate to loud

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES : None

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES : None

CURRICULA RESPONSIBILITIES :

Assist the teacher in delivering instructional objectives for a given subject and / or classroom to Special Education students, as developed by the building

METHOD OF EVALUATION : Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
