Job Description Position Introduction
The Saint Mary's Global Women's Leadership Institute brings together women from the Middle East, North Africa, and the United States for an intensive five-week study of Civic Engagement through the Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) Madeleine K. Albright Young Women Leaders Program, sponsored by the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Institute focuses on the history, culture, and politics of the United States focusing specifically on the contributions of women. Additionally, the program focuses on women's leadership, locally and globally, and students work collaboratively to identify the most pressing issues facing women and girls around the globe today.
The theme of the institute is "Civic Engagement" and sessions will investigate issues of social justice, gender equity, community-building, volunteerism, grassroots and youth activism, political leadership, media literacy, preventing disinformation, civil discourse, active citizenship, and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy, civil rights and protections, and voting rights.
Student Program Coordinator (SPC) Internships are paid internships that are available to current Saint Mary's College students and recent graduates. SPC Interns provide logistical support in planning and implementing the Institute. The internship lasts from May 20 - July 30, 2024, and interns are required to attend all Institute meetings, planning sessions, programming, and events. Additionally, interns are required to attend Institute travel (all expenses paid) and to serve as resident assistants and live on campus during the Institute. Applications will be reviewed starting February 15th, and will be open until filled.
Internship Description
The Student Program Coordinator (SPC) Internship will assist with travel arrangements, transportation, accommodations, excursions, site visits, welcome reception, closing ceremony, and all other reservations and accommodations support as needed, and plan orientation sessions for participants, design orientation and welcome materials and resource binders, design programs/flyers/promotional materials. The SPC Intern will work with faculty to gather a list of reading assignments, films/videos, websites, and another course material, Support faculty in ensuring ADA accessibility, assist in the creation of a course Canvas site and upload all course materials, and other duties as assigned. The Student Program Coordinator (SPC) Internship will continue Pre-Institute responsibilities, as needed, and Serve as Camp Counselors living on-site with participants in the SMC dorms and provide hospitality, supervision, and logistical support to participants, make program announcements, send informational emails, guide participants around Saint Mary's campus, distribute linens/towels/other necessary materials, be responsive in the event of an emergency, uphold SUSI guidelines and rules, serve as sources of information and assistance, and be available and approachable while working. The SPC Intern will provide logistical support during the Institute: accompany participants to scheduled events (i.e., group meals at restaurants, volunteering at service locations), set up classrooms, prepare handouts for trips, work in the Global Education Office while participants are in class, and attend all Institute travel and provide logistical support. Trips include one week in Washington D.C., day trips to local attractions, and weekend trips to Chicago, and Dearborn, MI. While traveling, SPC Interns will serve as chaperones, complete head counts on buses, ensure participants arrive at bus/events in a timely manner, keep record of confirmations of reservations/tours information, prepare city maps and lists of attractions/restaurants, serve as guides and activity organizer for participants.
