Job Summary:

The Director of Ministry Life (DML) assists the Pastor in terms of forming, overseeing, and coordinating the activities of all volunteer-based parish ministries, not including Faith Formation. The DML serves as a liaison between ministry leaders, the pastor, and parish staff, providing communication, directives, supervision, and formation to ministry leaders according to the vision and mission of the parish as outlined by the Pastor. The DML will also assist parishioners in identifying their gifts and strengths to become engaged and active members of our parish through participation in the various ministries. The DML will work with the Pastor to develop new ministries that best serve the needs of our parishioners, ensure that parish ministries are operating in accordance with the parish mission and vision statements, and participate in strategic planning for future growth and development.

The DML must be an active and visible member of the parish, a person of deep faith and prayer, called to ministry, and supportive of the parish and diocesan policies and procedures. This position reports directly to the COO and operates with some latitude for the use of independent judgment and initiative.

Ministerial Character

The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish of Saint William which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ's mission present and enduring in the parish. To fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or laypeople). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.

Positions employed at Saint William help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.


Essential Job Duties:

  • As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of Saint William Parish in both your professional and personal life.
  • Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed. This includes participating in diocesan EIM training, which provides oversight at the parish level.
  • Ensure that all volunteers, ministries, and groups are compliant with the Diocese of Austin EIM policies.
  • Actively recruit, supervise, and provide training for ministry leaders and volunteers.
  • Coordinate, monitor, and supervise the activities of volunteer-based ministries in the Parish (not including Faith Formation).
  • Coordinate communication between the clergy and office staff with ministry leaders.
  • Create, organize, and facilitate ongoing formation opportunities for ministry leaders and members.
  • Assist the COO and the Director of Accounting in developing, supporting, and monitoring parish budget items related to volunteer ministries.
  • Assist in coordinating parish events.
  • Assist the Pastor and other clergy in providing ongoing pastoral care to parishioners and others in need.
  • Evaluate each ministry of the parish on an annual basis to ensure fidelity to the overall mission and vision of the parish, good stewardship of resources, and overall activity level and effectiveness.
  • Develop new ministries in consultation with the Pastor and based on the needs of the parish.
  • Meet with the Pastor regularly to report about ministry life and volunteers.
  • Meet with the COO regularly for ongoing evaluation and direction.
  • Supervise, support, and coach the Ministry & Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Responsible for the hospitality of our liturgies. These include but are not limited to the ushers and welcome center.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Daily 30-minute prayer time.
Requirements:


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed namely:

  • Knowledge of the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church as passed down through Tradition, Sacred Scripture, and the doctrine of the church, including but not limited to the New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE), the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Code of Canon Law, and Papal Encyclicals.
  • Knowledge of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Diocese of Austin Policies and best practices regarding comprehensive Faith Formation and Sacrament Preparation.
  • Knowledge of the methods of catechesis outlined in the National Directory for Catechesis.
  • Skill in verbal and nonverbal communication.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications (e.g. word processing software, spreadsheets, email, databases).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Saint William staff, clergy, peers, and laity.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to honor and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain respect at all times.
  • Ability to work with and coordinate between multiple ministries and different ministry structures to meet agreed-on goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work with and lead a highly diverse membership base.
  • Ability to prepare and conduct public presentations.
  • Ability to teach the Catholic Faith effectively.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to follow instructions furnished in verbal or written format.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited American college or university (or equivalent in a foreign country) with some coursework in theology, religious education, pastoral ministry, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Five (5) years of full-time work experience in a parish.

Language:

  • English (proficient in conversing, reading, and writing).
  • Spanish (conversing) is required.

Catholic Requirement:

  • Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
