Salado Isolation Mining Contractors (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Safety Representative to join our team located in Carlsbad, NM.
The successful candidate will perform duties as necessary to eliminate or control hazardous conditions resulting from equipment and machinery operation or any other unsafe acts, which may lead to personal injury or property damage. Assist in the identification, analysis, and control of occupational hazards; this is normally accomplished through inspections conducted about the site, both surface and underground. Document any hazards discovered during these inspections and outline specific actions that will be taken to address and resolve these concerns. Perform safety functions assigned by management. Review occupational safety policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards, assist with incident investigations and root cause teams when required. Assist in the evaluation of new safety programs. Assist in research for use in the determination of accident prevention measures.
Must acquire knowledge, skills, and ability to obtain safety certifications. Must be a current USW member. The successful candidate will be required to have 40-hour MSHA Underground, Electric Cart, and Hazardous Waste Worker training and Industrial Safety & Hygiene Qualifications. Must be able and willing to work underground. Successful candidate will be required to complete specified qualifications within one year from date of employment. Successful candidate will also be required to be Radiological Worker II qualified and Powered Assisted Particulate Respirator (PAPR) qualified.
This position requires these Physical Requirements: Intermittent: standing, sitting, walking, bending, twisting, crawling, kneeling, climbing, and eye-hand/foot-hand-eye coordination. Occasional (1-3hr/day): bending, twisting, crawling, climbing, and foot-hand-eye coordination. Frequent (4-7hr/day): standing, sitting, walking, and eye-hand- coordination. Repetitive Motion: intermittent fingers, wrist/hand, arm/shoulder, and leg/foot. Occasional (1-3hr/day): leg/foot. Frequent (4-7hr/day): fingers, wrist/hand, and arm/shoulder. Hand manipulation both hands. Simple grasping, power grasping, pushing, and pulling, and fine manipulation. Job will require reaching at or above shoulder level and use of the feet to operate foot controls. Lift/carry/push/pull requirements. Intermittent (1-10lbs); Occasional (1-3hr/day). Sensory: hearing - must be able to hear quiet conversation in both ears. Vision: acuity-near, far, depth, color, full field, and low light. Balance: must maintain without assistance. Touch: pressure, vibration. Smell: chemical odors, smoke, and equipment odors. Speech: must be able to articulate verbally. Use computer-mouse (1-4 hours per day).

This position will be filled with SIMCO USW membership first in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement before any other candidate considerations.

Pay rate of $47.69 per hour with annual increases in August to $50.08 (2025) and $51.33 (2026) per the CBA.
