Instrumentation & Electrical Engineer Intern (Summer 2025)

Summary: This is an entry level position to provide instrumentation and electrical engineering designs for small to medium sized projects in chemical processing and industrial facilities.

  • Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution
  • 0-5 years work experience in manufacturing, chemical, refining and/or heavy industrial facilities and/or demonstrated ability to consistently perform roles and responsibilities of design engineer.
  • Responsibilities:
  • Serve as lead discipline engineer or project manager on small to medium sized I&E and multidiscipline projects.
  • Provide project leadership to ensure communication and execution of work is within scope, schedule, and budget by monitoring project progress; coordinating activities; resolving problems.
  • Work with HCS P.E. oversight throughout the course of projects.
  • Prepare quality engineering designs by directing CAD design personnel in the development of I&E installation drawings, data sheets and specifications, to meet customer specifications and applicable codes with a moderate to minimal level of guidance.
  • Prepare estimates, scopes of work, material specifications, bid packages, calculations, and equipment specification packages with a moderate to minimal level of guidance.
  • Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine optimum engineering solutions.
  • Produce effective and accurate detailed design calculations, testing requirements and materials of construction specifications associated with the project. Calculations produced shall be neatly prepared and organized for efficient checking by others and as a deliverable when required.
  • Ensure calculations and designs meet client specifications and standards as well as industry engineering codes such as NEC, NFPA, IEEE, and ISA, etc.
  • Perform overall quality control of the I&E designs to ensure technical and quality standards are maintained.
  • Ensure all engineering and designs are reviewed by a Senior I&E engineer before issuing to clients.
  • Closeout completed projects by transmitting final drawings and project information to the client followed by proper file management on the HCS file system.
  • Travel to various sites to participate in risk and design reviews, gather field data, and provide construction and startup support.
  • Inspect completed installations and observe operations to ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications, as well as compliance with operational and safety standards.
  • Skills and competences to be measured and evaluated:

  • Follow all HCS and client safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate safe work action and attitudes.
  • Report any safety concerns to management.
  • Maintain qualifications to travel to and enter client sites.
  • Pass annual and random substance screenings.
  • Pass periodic background screenings.

Company Policies:

  • Maintain joblog information
  • Ensure that design checklists are followed.
  • Maintain drawing and project files in an organized manner.
  • Ensure all project documents are stored in project drive on company project.
  • Ensure working drawings have been checked-out from client and are not reference copies.
  • Verify drawings are returned to client in a timely manner.
  • Maintain clean and neat office appearance.

Communication:

  • Verbally express technical issues in a clear and concise manner.
  • Seek assistance and advice from peers or senior staff as needed.
  • Ensure project status report is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Lead design efforts in an effective and respectful manner.
  • Recognize and communicate scope and design changes to client in a timely manner.
  • Cooperate and communicate effectively with project manager, designers, and other disciplines.
  • Effectively coordinate with other engineers and designers with competing priorities.
  • Attend company and department meetings

Accountability:

  • Ensure timesheet is accurate and updated daily.
  • Ensure EIOBoard is accurate and up to date at all times.
  • Consistent and dependable work schedule.
  • Communicate any change in work schedule in a timely manner.
  • Plan and communicate time off.
  • Keep commitments.

Time Management:

  • Organize work priorities to meet agreed upon schedule of deliverables.
  • Manage competing priorities.
  • Maintain personal schedule for multiple projects, multiple clients, and multiple resources.
  • Group activities to maximize productivity.
  • Minimize personal communications and internet activity.

Technical Duties Include But Not Limited To:

  • Working knowledge of electrical and instrumentation codes (NEC, NFPA, IEEE and ISA)
  • Interpret existing client design calculations.
  • Obtain vendor quotes.
  • Working knowledge of PFD’s and P&ID’s
  • Process instrumentation sizing and specification
  • Control valve sizing/specifying
  • Process analyzer and sample system
  • Control panel layout and design
  • Industrial low and medium voltage power distribution system design
  • Grounding and lightning protections systems
  • Electrical Power Load Studies
  • Cable Voltage Drop, Ampacity and Short Circuit Calculations
  • Low voltage motor control systems
  • Electric heat tracing systems
  • VFD system installation and support
  • Industrial facility lighting
  • Communication systems
  • Computer networking
  • Backup power systems
  • Power system protection coordination modeling
  • Arc flash hazards analysis
  • PLC control system modifications, retrofits and migrations.
  • HMI application development and modifications.

Client Relationships:

  • Be able to share HCS company history and capabilities to clients.
  • Build and maintain client trust and relationships.
  • Conduct frequent and deliberate marketing efforts. (client visits, lunches, etc.)
