What are the responsibilities and job description for the SLCC Student, Work Study - Program Associate I, America Reads Tutor-Esperanza (Bilingual) position at Salt Lake Community College?
Job Summary
Providing consistent reading support and engaging mentorship can have an immense impact on the life of a young person who is struggling with reading. You can become a part of their literacy journey and earn your federal work study award through the America Reads program through the Thayne Center.
America Reads Tutors work with elementary aged children on a one-on-one or small group basis to build their literacy skills at one of our partner sites. Partner site will be Esperanza Elementary, and the role will be in both English and Spanish.
The Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership, and Community Engagement provides a supportive and inclusive office for students to explore community involvement, leadership, and volunteerism. By providing opportunities in conjunction with local nonprofits we cultivate an environment to test our students’ interests and area of study while assisting them to realize they have the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in our community.
Tutors work at the partner site for 8-20 hours per week, receiving a schedule from the partner about which students will benefit most from consistent motivation and support. During their time at the partner site, tutors will build a mentoring relationship with the students and share their passion for reading and education. In this program, the tutor will get direct experience working with students, learning about the education system, and working in a fast-paced environment. This is a community work-study position (more info can be found below). Community work-study should not be your primary source of income, but to help with supplemental expenses only.
