Job duties specific to Histotechnologist functions: · Prepares grossing area and specimens for pathologists; · Assists pathologists with setting up surgical specimens, gross description, etc.; · Labels specimens containers, cassettes and slides and affixes coverslips to slides; · Prepares sections of human tissue for microscopic examination and patient diagnosis, using techniques to gross, embed, section, stain, and mount tissue from surgical procedures; · Prepares frozen sections; · Performs recuts and additional stains including special and immunohistochemistry stains requested by the pathologist. · Files, retrieves, and distributes slides, blocks, reports; · Maintains and operates equipment and instruments, tracks all routine maintenance and quality control performed; · Maintains all records, updates, standard operating procedures, etc., as required by regulatory agencies (i.e., NYSDOH CLEP, TJC, OSHA); · Enters information such as demographics, order numbers, etc., into automated systems; · Attends pertinent seminars, webinars, etc., to remain abreast of instrumentation and methodology in the field. · Uses computer applications and/ or other automated systems (Word, Excel, Email) and other database software in performing work assignments; · Disposes hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines; · Complies with all policies and procedures · Oversees technical aspects of staff performance · Reviews, revises and develops procedures · Collaborates with laboratory management (Laboratory director, Anatomic Pathology Coordinator, etc.)
