Position summary: The billing clerk is responsible for filing and follow-up of claims, working past due accounts, posting payments and generating patient statements.
Role qualifications:
Education
- High school diploma or its equivalent.
- Medical terminology and coding experience helpful
Experience
- Medical coding and billing experience preferred but not required.
Licenses/Certificate
- BLS preferred but not required.
- Must attend in-services and staff meetings.
Position responsibilities:
- Verify claims for accurate information.
- Code claims with the appropriate CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS codes.
- Enter charges and payments on a timely basis.
- Submit charges and payments electronically through clearinghouse, or on paper to payors daily.
- Follow-up on claims status as to assure that claims are being paid timely.
- Work internal collection accounts and work with outside collection agencies.
- Review and make daily bank deposits.
- Manage and generate patient statement cycle.
- Learn and maintain knowledge of RHC billing guidelines, Medicare and Medicaid billing guidelines.
- Work with the Clinic Manager, Administration, and any others to correct problems as they may arise with claim submission.
- Work to maintain a good public image of the Clinic when taking phone calls from patients and family members about their accounts.
- Initiate and receive follow-up phone calls with insurance companies and patients regarding accounts, Medicare, and Medicaid.
- Must be able to balance daily and monthly reports.
Essential skills and experience:
- Must have the ability to type and use appropriate office equipment and computers.
- Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as insurance forms and components of medical charts.
- Must have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
