The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As a Maintenance Technician, you are responsible for manual labor tasks in various job duties such as cleaning, removing debris, loading, and unloading materials, assembling and disassembling temporary structures, digging trenches, and compacting earth. Typically, you will be under the direct supervision of a Craftsperson or Manager. Still, many routine and repetitive tasks may be completed without difficulty and under general supervision.
As a Maintenance Technician, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Construct concrete forms, mix, and pour concrete.
- General knowledge of hand and power tools
- Prepare and patch driveway and walkway surfaces.
- Maintain all safety standards.
- Safely operate Zoo vehicles, including dump, pick-up, flatbed trucks, forklifts, skid steer, backhoe, and personal lift equipment
- Dig drainage ditches, clean culverts, and fill washouts.
- Maintain Zoo vehicles and other powered equipment.
- Moves items from place to place, according to direction from the craftsperson or manager.
- Moving tools, equipment, or other materials as directed in plans or by the craftsperson or manager.
- Assist various Craftspersons with assigned projects.
- Construct wall framing and roof trussing.
- Installing insulation, drywall, siding, metal/asphalt shingles roofing.
- Comfortable working at heights on roofs and in lift equipment.
- Upholds all company policies outlined in the Zoo Standard Operating Procedures, SA Zoo Team Member Handbook, and Code of Business Conduct.
- Consistently exhibit an attitude of service inside and outside of the zoo, showing hospitality to all.
- Be fully committed to the mission of San Antonio Zoo to create awareness that inspires action to care for the wild world we steward and the animals we protect.

Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
- Ability to understand, foresee, and apply necessary safety precautions applicable to the Zoo environment.
- Knowledge of the use of hand & power tools and equipment is required.
- Attentive to detail and alert always to ensure safety.
- Able to receive and follow instructions and communicate with co-workers.
- Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
- Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment National Sex Offender Search, Criminal Background Check, and Drug Screen.
- We enjoy year-round operation for all staff and must be available day, night, and weekends, and occasional special after-hour assignments.
