Job Description

JOB SUMMARY :

To perform responsible accounting clerical work involved in auditing, balancing and verifying payroll and related records and documents; and to prepare payroll listings and documents on an automated payroll system.

SUPERVISION :

Positions in this classification are supervised by the Payroll Supervisor.

Positions in this classification exercise no supervision.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Gathers, tabulates, extends, balances and posts payroll and related data on an automated payroll system.
  • Audits and adjusts times reports, data processing payroll listing sheets and payroll cards.
  • Verifies, codes and inputs data according to established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains sick leave records; tabulates and records various payroll deductions.
  • Communicates with employees regarding deductions and paycheck information.
  • Computes and prepares reports on unemployment insurance.
  • Prepares reports and data on income tax withheld.
  • Mails checks for voluntary deductions to companies.
  • Maintains retirement services credits for STRS and PERS; maintains employee attendance records.
  • Processes forms and enters data for each new employee; inputs notice of employment.
  • Mails pay warrants to employees.
  • Responds to requests for information and assistance from Departmental staff, employees and department heads; coordinates activities with the County as necessary.
  • Prepares payroll analysis and studies for staff.
  • Performs job related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND TRAINING :

Two years of payroll preparation experience for an organization with a monthly payroll of at least 100 employees which has occurred within the past ten years.

High school diploma or equivalent.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION : This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 38A. Most positions in this class work 8 hours / 12 months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

THE EXAMINATION :

  • The examination process for recruitments may consist of one or any combination of the following : written examination; online examination; performance examination and / or physical agility examination; technical oral examination, scored on a job-related basis; supplemental questionnaire or training and experience evaluation, scored on a job-related basis.
  • Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process. Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit as determined by these competitive examinations.
  • Candidates will be notified in accordance with Personnel Commission Rules.
  • This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.
