The San Diego County Office of Education is recruiting for an Outdoor Education Specialist for the Cuyamaca Outdoor School of the Student Services and Programs Division. Outdoor Education Specialists assist in implementing learning and recreational activities with large and small student groups in a fifth/sixth-grade outdoor education school, including organizing and leading activities such as nature hikes, conservation and craft projects, and learning activities with large and small student groups on a variety of outdoor education subjects, such as biology, botany, ecology, astronomy, and conservation. The position applies standards to maintain student discipline and safety, supervises students in living activities, maintains equipment and learning areas, administers emergency first aid, supervises students, assists in ensuring site is kept clean and orderly, and operates various technology and other related equipment.
Located in the beautiful, expansive, and unspoiled 25,000-acre Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, SDCOE's Cuyamaca Outdoor School is San Diego County's original 6th Grade Camp. Cuyamaca Outdoor School enriches lives by connecting children to science through nature and by fostering positive character development. Join our passionate, caring and energetic team as we serve up to 425 students per week at our camp located in the beautiful Cuyamaca Rancho State Park in East County San Diego!
This position is part- time and will offer the classified benefits package, which includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage, and will participate in the CalPERS state retirement system.
While this position is 40 hours per week, the daily hours will vary.
Please note: Final selection interviews will be conducted in-person at the Camp Cuyamaca site.
Certain positions may require a male only or female only employee. This position requires knowledge of natural sciences and environmental education concepts, as well as the ability to work effectively with students and adults in small and large group settings. A typical qualifying experience would be a combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to completion of college-level coursework in the natural sciences, recreation, education, or other related topics, and experience working in a residential outdoor education or recreation program with school-age children. Possession of an American Red Cross CPR and First Aid/AED certificate is required within 30 days of appointment.
