RADIO COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS ENGINEER

The Sheriff's Wireless Services Division maintains radio communications for San Diego County departments and the San Diego County- Imperial County Regions Communications System (NextGen RCS). The NextGen RCS system consists of a 100 node MPLS microwave network, a 700 channel Astro P25 Phase I / Phase II 800 MHz trunking system, 50 radios communication facilities, and over 200 conventional interoperability repeaters. This system provides critical public safety communications to over 20,000 radio users throughout San Diego and Imperial counties.

As part of the Sheriff's Wireless Services Division this position may be required to :

  • Prepare plans to establish radio coverage and communication propagation contours for base station installations and determines such factors as frequency, power levels, system gains and losses, sensitivity parameters, and antenna heights.
  • Conduct engineering studies of sources of potential interference and compatibility requirements for proposed communication installations requiring collection and preliminary evaluation of engineering data, such as measurements of frequency, bandwidth, modulation technique, field strength, emission levels, and nature of distortion.
  • Prepare specifications for equipment, circuits, and systems implementation to ensure adequacy of design features and compliance with general design and operational requirements.
  • Prepare installation plans and cost estimates for the configuration, interconnecting circuitry, and location of equipment, and inspects construction to ensure contractor’s conformance with blueprints and specifications.
  • Contact telecommunications carriers, FCC, public utility companies, public safety agencies, vendors, and other agencies to coordinate the implementation of assigned systems.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Three (3) years of full-time professional level engineering experience in the field of electronic communications which must have included working with large, multi-site radio and / or microwave networks; AND

    2. Possession of a bachelor's degree from a U.S. accredited college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, telecommunications engineering, or a closely related engineering field; OR

    3. An equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience listed above, totaling seven (7) years

    Note : Professional level experience performing engineering and analytical work on land mobile radios, trunked radio systems, microwave transport networks, and internet protocol (IP) based communications systems is highly desirable. A thorough knowledge of computer programs used to perform engineering design and drawing, such as AutoCAD, is highly desirable.
