Primary Purpose

In conjunction with SDG&E's Wildfire Mitigation Program (WMP), this position will integrate a wide range of data examination and investigation techniques that will be used to examine existing and new WMP programs and initiatives. This examination will result in the development of trends and further analysis to determine the viability of the current WMP projects and initiatives and provide a platform for continuous enhancement as well as development of new initiatives. The Data Scientist will also partner with the appropriate operating unit experts to identify program metrics and measures, assess and secure relevant data, perform quantified data analytics, develop alternative strategies and corresponding impacts, align recommended solutions with overall wildfire mitigation strategies, implement solutions based on quantifiable results, and implement and maintain process and tools that drive outcomes into future assessments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This position will integrate a wide range of data examination and investigation techniques to SDG&E's wildfire mitigation program to show efficacy and value of the current programs and initiatives contained in the wildfire mitigation plan. This examination will also result in the development of trends and further analysis to determine the viability of the current WMP projects and initiatives and provide a platform for continuous enhancement as well as development of new initiatives.
  • Responsible in helping operating teams achieve operating objectives and advance the utility's footprint in Wildfire Mitigation.
  • This position will work with operating area experts to refine program metrics and measures, assesses and validate relevant data, perform data analytics, develops alternative program and initiative strategies, and recommend alternate solutions to improve and augment the overall wildfire mitigation plan. The position will also utilize statistical analysis to provide quantifiable results of existing and new programs as they become available.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to identify and solve a variety of problems and to clarify Wildfire Mitigation Programs objectives, policies, strategies and challenges. Gathers and validates information from all relevant sources. Presents data and explains how it can be used.
  • Builds and fosters external alliances to maintain up to date knowledge of industry-related issues in Wildfire Mitigation analytics.
  • Develops and delivers dashboards, reports and presentations on Wildfire Mitigation Programs performance against risk informed metrics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree In Statistics, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Business, related field, or equivalent training and/or experience in large data examination.
  • 8 years - Experience with data analysis, examination, development, including some experience with tabular and time series data manipulation and analysis. Experience with business intelligence analysis, data mining and machine learning.
  • Working knowledge of Python 3 with associated data science libraries, such as Scikit-Learn, Keras, and XGBoost.
  • Knowledge of advanced GIS concepts with experience querying, modifying, and displaying of geospatial data.
  • Solid understanding of basic statistical concepts, trends and analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Cognos Business Intelligence and Power Business Intelligence.
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills, with ability to translate complex analysis into clear and effective management communications.

Other Qualifications

  • Must be willing to participate as needed in Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activations at any hour.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree In Statistics, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Business or related field.
