Summary
The Accounting Assistant works daily in MTS’s complex ERP system (SAP) to process invoices and credit memos, prepare check runs, prepare bank deposits, and review vendor statements in a very fast-paced environment. Timely processing is required to sustain $35-$40 million in inventory, $150-$200 million in construction-in-progress and $500 million in operating expenses annually.

Knowledge of or ability to learn MTS policies and regulations; ability to read, understand and apply MTS policies, regulations and union labor contracts; ability to write letters, memoranda and reports using clear, concise and grammatically correct English; ability to speak clearly, distinctly and effectively in person-to-person or small group situations using tact and diplomacy; ability to coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement decisions and delegate responsibilities to appropriate personnel; ability to establish and maintain priorities in order to complete assignments by deadlines without detailed instructions; skill in verifying the accuracy and completeness of forms and reports; knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and the ability to learn and use other software that MTS might have or acquire; exceptional organizational and multi-tasking skills; exceptional collaborative and team-centric working style.
Physical Requirements
The successful candidate must be able to fulfill the physical demands of the job such as walking, stooping, sitting, bending, reaching for overhead files and occasional lifting (must be able to lift up to 15 pounds). Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and perform tasks involving manual dexterity, such as use of a computer and 10-key. Work will at times require more than 8 hours per day or an irregular work week to perform the essential duties of the position. Duties will be performed primarily in an office type environment and may require travel to external locations and agencies.
Experience/Education/Certificates/License(s)
An associate’s degree in accounting or business is preferred. Two years of experience in an accounts payable environment may be substituted for the educational requirement. SAP experience preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Must satisfactorily pass all applicable examinations including, but not limited to, a pre-employment physical, drug screen and background check.
Salary Grade
The anticipated starting pay for this position is between $48,000 and $56,178. This range represents the expected starting salaries for new hires, typically within the lower to mid-portion of the overall salary range, which encompasses the full potential earnings for the role. Examples Of Duties
Essential Functions
- Processes over 500 documents per week including PO-based invoices, non-PO based invoices and credit memos.
- Processes weekly check runs and ACH batches which average around 200 payments per week.
- Works daily with Procurement to resolve issues related to Goods POs including unit of measurement issues, tax codes, freight amounts, pricing and quantities.
- Works daily with Procurement when Service POs are out of funds or are not set up properly.
- Follows up with project managers throughout the agency when the three-way match is not met for non-stock items.
- Verifies signatures on travel reports, committee rosters and other required forms are in compliance with all Board policies.
- Prepares weekly bank deposits for all agencies. Responsible for obtaining the proper general ledger coding when there is not an invoice associated with the cash receipt.
- Processes wire payments, ensuring necessary signatures are first obtained.
- Responsible for maintaining net 30 with all vendors and reconciling vendor statements.
- Provides requested documents to the external auditors during both interim and field work.
- Provides timely assistance to both vendors and internal customers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
