Job Description

Maintaining efficiency and economy in operations management requires flexibility in job assignments. While each employee shall have a primary responsibility for the job in which that employee has been hired or later promoted to, each employee may be expected to perform other jobs from time to time.

SUMMARY :

The Information Security and Intelligence Intern will assist with Security Operations Center (SOC) activities, including triaging security alerts and support vulnerability management tasks, such as processing reports and creating remediation tickets. Additionally, the intern will work alongside security engineers, contributing to ongoing security operations and helping to streamline vulnerability management processes. Prospective interns should be able to handle a complex and full workload, demonstrating strong organizational skills and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES : Essential Functions

  • Assists Security Engineers in operational tasks related to security monitoring, analysis, and remediation.
  • Contributes to vulnerability management processing, including reports and creating tickets for remediation.
  • Monitors and assesses incoming security alerts from tools such as :
  • Security Information and Event Management (SIEM)
  • Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR)
  • Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDS / IPS).
  • Conducts initial analysis to identify potential threats and escalate significant events to senior team members.
  • Processes vulnerability reports, prioritizes risks, and tracks remediation efforts.
  • Supports documentation of remediation progress and collaborates with other teams to close gaps.
  • Works effectively with cross-functional teams, including the Information Technology (IT) department, to coordinate security efforts.
  • Maintains detailed records of incidents, vulnerabilities, and remediation actions.
  • Assists in the preparation of reports and presentations summarizing SOC and vulnerability management activities.
  • Stays informed about cybersecurity trends, tools, and best practices.
  • Actively participates in training sessions and team discussions to enhance knowledge and skills.

  • QUALIFICATIONS :

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of or ability to learn MTS policies and regulations; ability to read, understand and apply MTS policies, regulations and union labor contracts; ability to write letters, memoranda and reports using clear, concise and grammatically correct English; ability to speak clearly, distinctly and effectively in person-to-person or small group situations to convey complex information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences; ability to coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement decisions and delegate responsibilities to appropriate personnel; ability to establish and maintain priorities in order to complete assignments by deadlines without detailed instructions; skill in verifying the accuracy and completeness of forms and reports; knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and the ability to learn and use other software that MTS might have or acquire; analytical and problem-solving skills; foundational knowledge of IT concepts, including operating systems, networks, and web technologies, alongside a solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, threat analysis, and incident response, gained through formal education.

    Physical Requirements

    The successful candidate must be able to fulfill the physical demands of the job such as walking, stooping, sitting, bending, reaching for overhead files and occasional lifting (must be able to lift up to 15 pounds). Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and perform tasks involving manual dexterity, such as use of a computer and 10-key. Duties will be performed primarily in an office type environment and may require travel to external locations and agencies.

    Experience / Education / Certificates / License(s)

    Completed coursework at an accredited university that is equivalent to a junior / senior level in computer science, computer information systems, information security, or a related field. Applicants must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

    GENERAL :

    Must satisfactorily pass all applicable examinations including, but not limited to, a pre-employment physical, drug screen and background check.

    While school is in session, the intern may work a maximum of 20 hours per week, which may expand to 40 hours per week while school is not in session. Hours and days of work are flexible. The successful candidate will be expected to work close to the maximum number of hours allowed. Anticipated duration of internship is one year.

    SALARY :

    17.25 - $19.25 per hour
