Overview

  • The salary for this position is $17.25 - $19.00 per hour, 29 hours per week.

 

The San Diego State University Institute for Transformative Education promotes college access and completion for low-income and/or first-generation-college students through excellence and innovation in education. SDSU Upward Bound (UB) educational programs are funded by the U.S. Department of Education to assist eligible high school students to pursue and complete postsecondary education. There are 13 staff members in the Academic Year and approximately 24 during the Six-Week Summer Academy. UB is funded to serve 167 students (93 UB Classic and 74 UB STAR) during the Academic Year and 60 students (33 UB Classic and 27 UB STAR) during the Six-Week Summer Academy.

 

The SDSU Institute for Transformative Education supported by the SDSU Research Foundation is seeking Teaching Assistants for our four Summer Academy courses - Healthy Communities, Emergency Preparedness, College Level Statistics, and Youth Impact Assessment. The Institute’s goal is to assist low-income and/or first-generation-college students currently in high school to prepare for success in college. The six-week summer academy is delivered to participants in two phases. Phase 1 is a four week, fast-paced, intensive academic coursework and enrichment activities program. Phase 1 uses a hybrid delivery system consisting of online, commuter days, and residential settings. During Phase 1 the Teaching Assistant will support the instructor in the assigned course in the classroom. Week 1 will be a virtual classroom and Weeks 2-4 will be in-person on the SDSU campus. The Teaching Assistant support duties will include tutoring students, answering questions on the course material, grading assignments, conducting reviews and study halls, and assisting the instructor during group work in the classroom and other duties as assigned. Phase 2 is the last two weeks of the Summer Academy. This Phase is online Mondays through Thursdays and Commuter Day on Fridays. The Teaching Assistant support duties are the same but will include helping to prepare their students for the Summer Academy Research Symposium during Weeks 5-6.

 

Mandatory Training Schedule:

Academic Staff Training: Monday, June 2, 2025 & Tuesday, June 3, 2025 (additional days may be scheduled if needed)

All-Staff Training: Wednesday, June 4, 2025

Parent/Student Orientation: Saturday, June 7, 2025 (Onsite SDSU Campus)

Phase 1 Dates:

         Online: Monday, June 9, 2025 - Friday, June 13, 2025

         In-Person: Monday, June 16, 2025 - Thursday, July 3, 2025 (Monday-Friday)

Phase 2 Dates: July 7, 2025- July 18, 2025 (Monday-Thursday Online and Friday In-Person)

Staff Debrief:  Thursday, July 3, 2025

Research Symposium: Saturday, July 19, 2025 (Onsite SDSU Campus)

 

Responsibilities

Responsibility 95%

  • Take initiative and assist instructors and students in assigned online and in-person classes.
  • Attend pre-program Academic Staff training which includes the All-Staff training, Parent/Student Orientation, weekly staff meetings, and attend the Summer Academy Research Symposium.
  • Consult with instructors regarding students’ progress in class.
  • Responsible for keeping attendance of students in class.
  • Assist instructors with completion and submission of daily attendance sheets, assignment sheets and grading.
  • Assist students with in-class assignments individually or in small groups under the supervision of the instructor.
  • Tutor and assist students during virtual and in-person study halls.
  • Copy, collate, and staple materials for instructors as needed (during face-to-face instruction).
  • Maintain communication with Program Director, Academic Coordinator, Administrative Support Assistant, Head Resident Advisors and other program staff as needed.
  • Participate in the Friday afternoon Academic Staff meeting.
  • Supervise students at all times to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Monitor students at mealtime for Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) requirements and maintain data logs.
  • When scheduled on a rotation, be on-call during the residential component of the program.
  • Maintain constant communication with program staff and students to ensure efficient program operation.
  • Report any problems relating to staff or students to the HRA or administrative staff.
  • Report immediately to the HRA in the event of serious student misbehavior or any time-sensitive issues, critical incidents/emergencies.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Must be familiar using Zoom and creating break-out rooms
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and clearly explain subject matter to adolescents.
  • Must be sensitive, respectful, and understanding of the needs of low-income and/or first-generation-college high school students.
  • Interact effectively with co-workers.
  • Understand and follow established work rules and procedures in the Staff Manual.
  • Ability to relate well to others within the environment.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Well organized, ability to meet deadlines, detail oriented; possess good judgment and common sense.
  • Demonstrate a high level of sensitivity to the needs of student communities we serve.
  • Background check and Fingerprint clearance results are required before starting the job.

 

Required Minimum Experience

  • One or more years of previous experience as a youth leader, camp counselor, or equivalent.

Preferred Education

  • Must have successfully completed at least two years of college work at an academic, accredited institution.
  • Must be in good academic standing at an academic, accredited institution or have completed a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Prefer students whose major(s)/minor(s) are in the following:
    • 1 TA - background in community health and lab work
    • 1 TA - background in emergency preparedness
    • 1 TA - strong background in mathematics and statistics
    • 1 TA - strong background in assessment and research

Preferred Experience/Special Skills

  • Prefer students who can demonstrate strong skill in the following: problem-solving, communication, and writing.
  • Instructional, tutorial and/or classroom experience working with low-income and/or first-generation-college high school students is highly desirable.
  • Valid California Driver’s License is preferred.
  • Experience with Upward Bound and/ or other TRIO Programs is highly desirable.
  • Experience with early outreach programs.
  • Experience working with students from different backgrounds.
  • Experience working at a camp or in a residential setting.
  • Fluency in a language other than English that the UB student population speaks.
