About the Library
Located in Civic Center, the San Francisco Law Library is an autonomous agency established by state law in 1870. It was the first county law library in the state of California, and the model for the statewide county law library system. It is the mission of the San Francisco Law Library to provide the judiciary, the public, the bar, and city, county, and state officials free access and use of legal reference materials in order that they may conduct their legal affairs and preserve their legal rights. About the Position
The Library Assistant supports the library by working as a member of our team performing customer service, operational, and technical work for the purpose of maintaining a well-organized library with a high standard of customer service. The position is Monday-Friday, full-time.
Representative Duties
- Greet library patrons via phone and in-person
- Provide circulation assistance
- Facilitate materials pick-ups and drop-offs
- Provide directional and informational assistance to patrons
- Assist patrons in use of online catalog and public access computers
- Assist patrons with computer printer and photocopy machine
- Assist opening and closing the library
- Shelving materials and maintaining order of the collection and space
- Retrieval of materials from closed stacks
- Assist with program registration and organization
- Assist with special projects, as assigned
- Assist Head of Technical Services with stacks maintenance and other projects
- Filing of loose-leaf publications
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of general library services, functions and organization
- A minimum of one year of experience in a position involving service to the public or library experience; two years is preferable
- Minimum of Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college, or paralegal certificate from an accredited program
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook
- Adaptable, work well with others, enjoy teamwork environment
- Detail-oriented and organized
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Ability to learn law library services and procedures
- Desire to learn about the legal system and legal information resources
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities: walking, sitting, standing or repeated bending for prolonged periods of time; light lifting and carrying
Desirable Qualifications
- Completion of courses in library or legal work
- Interest in a librarianship career
- Ability to work with people of all types
- Business experience
- Experience with loose-leaf filing
- Knowledge of legal terminology
- Law library or general library experience a plus
