JOB SUMMARY
The SFSYO Music Director is responsible for conducting the Youth Orchestra in all rehearsals and concerts. In addition, the Music Director works closely with both the Artistic Planning and Education departments on season repertoire planning, scheduling, and long-term vision, as well as with the SFS musicians who serve as coaches.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead all rehearsals and performances of the SFSYO at Davies Symphony Hall.
- Direct long-term artistic goals and vision of the SFSYO.
- Participate in soloists’ piano rehearsals, chamber music rehearsals, and sectional coachings, as needed.
- In consultation with SFSYO coaches and staff, adjudicate entrance auditions, seating auditions, and concerto competition.
- Regular discussions with SFSYO Coaches, and SFS Education/YO Staff.
- Participate in YO Committee meetings, and occasional Development events, as needed.
Administrative:
- Collaborate with Artistic Planning department on choosing repertoire that is appropriate for the YO’s level and keeps with the SFS’ artistic goals, consulting YO coaches when necessary.
- Work with Artistic Planning, Education, and Operations Departments on tour scheduling and planning (when applicable)
TIME COMMITMENT
This is a three year contract starting in the 24/25 season. The SFSYO traditionally performs 3 full orchestra concerts each year at Davies Symphony Hall towards the end of each 3-month cycle. In addition, the YO gives a performance each year of Peter and the Wolf in the month of December. Weekly rehearsals take place on Saturday afternoons with some additional evenings and Sundays, particularly close to the concerts. Reasonable flexibility will be afforded in order to accept other engagements. Whilst no other ‘formal’ commitment is asked of, there will be the possibility for the YO Music Director to assist and cover conductors for the SFS within the subscription season as mutually agreed.
Qualifications
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to being a first-rate musician, this candidate should have the following skills
- Extensive working experience leading ensembles of high caliber student musicians, ages 12-21.
- Thorough and broad knowledge of repertoire to create an appropriate curriculum, including both standard and more contemporary works.
- Ability to recognize and identify developmental challenges – musical and otherwise – and willingness to work with staff and YO coaches on mentoring and supporting students.
- Successful experience leading and inspiring young musicians in a high functioning and nurturing environment.
- Exceptional communication skills (written and oral), balancing tact and firmness as needed.
- Appreciation for working with teens and young adults from various backgrounds and sensitivity to the unique needs of young adults during their formative years.
