Overview
Under direction, performs responsible supervisory and information systems activities and assists in the management of the San Joaquin General Hospital Laboratory Department; develops and coordinates the implementation and maintenance of the Laboratory Information Systems functions and activities; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
Typical Duties
- Assists in the management of the San Joaquin General Hospital clinical laboratory operations; selects, trains, assigns, coordinates the work of, supervises, and evaluates subordinate professional, paraprofessional and clerical personnel; may perform the most difficult tests and/or procedures.
- Plans, develops, maintains, analyzes computerized laboratory information systems operations; maintains, reviews and edits system databases; develops system parameters and procedures to optimize workflow; assists in the development and maintenance of the department charges for services; acts as liaison between the laboratory information system and the Information Systems Department to facilitate systems development installation and analysis, and hardware and software systems support.
- Develops, implements, and enforces laboratory information systems operational policies and procedures for staff use; trains and provides technical support to hospital laboratory and pathology staff and other laboratory information systems end users.
- Initiates and/or participates in quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement activities in order to assure compliance with State and regulatory regulations and standards.
- Participates in the preparation of the department budget; may authorize expenditures; may recommend equipment and supply levels.
- Designs and supervises the maintenance and distribution of technical, statistical and financial batch reporting for the Laboratory to Hospital staff, providers and external agencies, as necessary; maintains archived patient results.
- Attends meetings and participates on committees as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology, Biological Sciences or related field.
Pattern I:
Experience: One year experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technician III or equivalent classification in San Joaquin County.
Pattern II: Four years experience as a clinical laboratory scientist, medical technologist, clinical microbiologist, or public health microbiologist including one year of experience supervising a major function or unit in a licensed clinical laboratory, hospital, clinic or approved public health laboratory.
And For Both Patterns:
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or certification as a Public Health Microbiologist issued by the State of California, Department of Health Services.
