SPECIAL DAY CLASS TEACHER CRITERIA
Moderate/Severe
Applicant demonstrates the ability to:
•Possess a severely handicapped credential or moderate-to-severe credential or be enrolled in the appropriate credential program
•Have knowledge of a variety of instructional strategies that are effective with students across a variety of disabilities
•Implement positive behavior management systems in a classroom and write and implement positive behavior intervention plans when appropriate
•Assess student needs utilizing a variety of assessment tools/techniques
•Individualize instruction to meet the unique needs of students
•Implement special education regulations and timelines
•Use a process approach in all instruction that promotes individual learning styles, diversity and developmentally appropriate strategies
•Write appropriate assessment reports and goals and objectives that are based on the district’s standards and benchmarks
•Be successful in collaborative co-teaching models with general education teachers, i.e. complimentary instruction, supportive learning activities, and team teaching
•Have knowledge of curriculum and instructional strategies used in general education classes and implement appropriate instructional strategies for students with a variety of abilities
•Successfully communicate with staff and families, and a willingness to work with staff members as a team player
•Be flexible in working with students, family, and staff
•Be willing to take on school wide responsibilities to support other staff members and demonstrate leadership skills
•Demonstrate skills in working with students in a positive, supportive manner
•Develop and maintain social structures for identified special education students such as ability awareness and friendship development concepts
•Be flexible in working with students, families and staff and demonstrates skills necessary to work as a team player
•Work in a collaborative relationship with general education and special education staff
•Assist with staff development activities related to special education
•Use computers and other current technology in the classroom
•Create a safe classroom environment that encourages risk taking and decision making
•Effectively communicate both orally and in writing
