SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE
The Direct Care Specialist (DCS) position is a key part of Sana’s multidisciplinary team. DCSs play an extremely important role in making every patient’s stay as safe and comfortable as possible. The position is responsible for assisting patients with activities of daily living, therapeutic programming and socialization and creating a welcoming, therapeutic environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (include but are not limited to)
- Assist in performing patient intakes, including interviewing patients to obtain basic history and performing baggage and property searches in accordance with established guidelines
- Address the daily non-therapeutic needs of patients using a calm, pleasant demeanor
- Orient new patients to the facility and services
- Assist with morning wake-up and evening bed checks
- Prepare to welcome new admissions by ensuring that all welcome materials are in place and rooms are clean and orderly
- Facilitate expressive therapy groups and recreational activities for patients
- Effectively communicate with patients using positive patient-centered language
- Accurately document patient information into the electronic medical record system
- Log laboratory specimens and prepare them for testing as indicated by the licensed staff
- Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean
- Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies
- Maintain inventory and assist in ordering medical, lab and office supplies and equipment
- Report all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to a licensed staff member
- Assist with transportation of patients to ancillary departments or appointments as directed
- Assist nursing staff with measuring vital signs, weight and height

QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred
- One or more years of experience working in a healthcare setting, preferably experience in a behavioral healthcare or substance use treatment setting
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation:
- Exposure to OSHA Category 1 tasks involving exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashes of them are Category I tasks. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks. Specific combinations of clothing and equipment are tailored for specific tasks. Minimum levels of protection in most cases include use of appropriate gloves. If there is the potential for splashes, protective eyewear or face shields should be worn. If there is potential for clothing being soaked with blood, protective gowns or aprons should be worn.
- Driving (or adequate alternate transportation), sitting for prolonged periods, light to moderate physical activity at times.
- Perform weight-related functions, including lifting 35-50 lbs., carrying 25-34 labs. and/or pushing/pulling 35-50 lbs.
