General Summary:

Alta Southwest is seeking an experienced professional to join our team as a Project Surveyor.  The Project Surveyor is an integral part of our Registered Land Surveyor staff providing leadership for our daily surveying operations which include but are not limited to conventional and geodetic control, boundary, design mapping, monument preservation, as-built and ALTA surveys; the preparation of Records of Survey, legal descriptions, technical notes and reports, CAD drawings and other deliverables and calculations.  The Project Surveyor monitors and coordinates surveying activities, oversees field crews and field data and maintains client relations on assigned projects.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advanced understanding of land surveying law, boundary principles, the Public Lands Survey System, GPS/GNSS and geodetic concepts/state plane coordinates, photogrammetry, construction/land development processes, Transportation, Flood Control projects, field procedures and crew safety best practices
  • Possess independent judgment, effective project management, excellent communication and supervisory skills, the ability to resolve complex problems
  • Coordinate with related professional disciplines to achieve project goals
  • Familiarity with land use regulations and the land development process
  • Perform research which may include using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Occasionally conduct field visits including hazardous construction sites having all types of terrain, heavy equipment, extreme temperatures and in all weather conditions
  • Have knowledge of Field Equipment/Instruments: proper use, capability, maintenance, methodology and best practices. Determine proper equipment and techniques to be used to meet project requirements
  • Proficient with CAD applications and common office software; Perform network adjustments of GPS/GNSS and total station observations, adjustments of traverse and level closures, and advanced understanding of coordinate geometry and basic survey computations 
  • Have a general knowledge of traffic control and safety procedures for a variety of surveying and construction operations.
  • Have a basic knowledge of first-aid and safety practices 

 Supervisory Skills 

  • Professionally relate to clients, members of the public and governmental agencies, field crew management, scheduling, manage equipment and supplies
  • Understand office operations, workflows and procedures, and problem-solving techniques
  • Ability to: evaluate personnel performance and perform basic budgeting and cost control techniques; train personnel in all aspects of field and/or office surveying practices; coordinate and supervise field work for assigned projects; assign, prioritize, schedule, and delegate work; maintain positive work environment and relationships

 

Other Responsibilities

  • Ability to: explain technical concepts to others; provide constructive feedback; direct, train, and evaluate the performance of staff; enforce safety practices; work independently; read and interpret engineering plans; analyze data; operate and maintain complex precision surveying instruments, engineering calculators, and personal computers; perform difficult algebraic, geometric, trigonometric, and precise engineering calculations; communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Communicate directly and effectively with customers under demanding conditions that include high work volume, firm deadlines, confrontational situations, disputed interpretations, and complex explanations to individuals with diverse levels of technical expertise
  • Develop, prepare, and present plans, reports, supporting documentation, and presentations
  • Analyze a variety of information or issues and effectively use independent judgment in interpretation of information, decision making, problem resolution, and compliance requirements
  • Travel to and participate in a variety of meetings, public hearings, conferences, seminars and related activities throughout the area that may occur on evenings or weekends

 

Education and Experience:

  1. 2 Year degree in Survey/Engineering or 15 years of progressive land surveying experience in public and private sectors.
  2. Possession of an Arizona RLS or the ability to obtain licensure in Arizona upon hire is required.
