What Your Job Will Be Like


Sandia National Laboratories is seeking to hire an experienced and highly motivated Interior Designer with a background in Furniture Design to join the new in-house Architecture & Engineering Design group.

This new team will provide Sandia with the internal capability to self-execute design services at Sandia National Labs in New Mexico. We are looking for a detail orientated and passionate teaming individual to join & collaborate with our dynamic group of Architects and Engineers in the development, design, and construction of building and infrastructure projects! The successful applicant will collaborate across SNL to plan, design, and provide guidance on the execution of office projects, collaborative space environments, and larger multi-discipline projects at the SNL-New Mexico site.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work to determine how best to plan and execute a furniture modification or new furniture requirement.
  • Coordinate within a team of internal or external engineering or architectural personnel, contractors, customers, and sponsors, to ensure that a project meets scope, schedule, and cost constraints of the client
  • Make technical contributions through capturing and developing occupancy/space requirements through systems furniture, accurately presenting issues, and solutions, and acting as a conduit for information sharing across several functional areas.
  • Conduct architectural programming to extract functional and spatial requirements on renovations or reconfiguration for customers.
  • Implement knowledge and understanding of building codes, regulations, and standards including, but not limited to IBC and ADA.
  • Provide CADD, Revit, CET, or Sketch Up models for design process to convey concepts to customers and construction documents to our general contractor partners or in house construction teams
  • Collaborate with the Systems Engineering Corporate Architects/ Engineers & Operations Architects/Engineers on campus, architectural, and interior standards.
  • Provide peer reviews of team member designs and construction documents and participate in SNL’s formal design review process of outsourced A/E partner designs as it pertains to design constructability and code criteria specific to interior design and furniture systems.

This position is eligible for telecommuting and the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.


Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design plus 2 years of office design or remodeling experience.
  • Experience creating a set of cohesive construction documents.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L- level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • CIDQ (NCIDQ) Certification and NM State License or in process of obtaining certification or license.
  • Experience using Autodesk CADD software products and 3D visualization software (e.g., Revit, CET).
  • Construction or field experience in office renovation including knowledge of design standards, practices, protocols, and system furniture component assembly details.
  • Experience with Steelcase and Haworth system furniture lines.
  • Experience working in a Furniture Dealership or AE firm, designing, planning & specifying systems furniture.
  • Experience in architectural interior finishes including casework, flooring, and wall finishes.
  • Experience working with Sandia’s FMOC organization and knowledge of Sandia design standards.
  • Knowledge of building codes, Americans with Disabilities Act (ANSI 117.1, ADAAG) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards (OSHA).
  • Ability to understand and interpret mechanical, electrical, and plumbing documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of related work hazards and safety programs.

About Our Team


The Architecture & Engineering Design Department provides in-house expedited design support for smaller low complexity office modifications, medium complexity collaboration & touch-down spaces and multi-disciplinary construction projects and facilities services that are contracted to SNL’s partner contractors or our in-house construction teams. The department also provides oversight and supporting construction administration support for construction projects and services.

Security Clearance


Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs


If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
