Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled maintenance and repair activities on gasoline and diesel powered automotive, heavy and light construction equipment, and other power equipment; performs other related duties as assigned/directed.

Education and Experience:- High School Diploma/GED Certificate from an accredited institution and one (1) year of experience as a skilled mechanic in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of gasoline/diesel powered vehicles and/or heavy equipment that includes routine and specialized work which could include working on fire, EMS, and other light/medium duty trucks, and heavy road/construction equipment.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid New Mexico Driver’s License
- Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
- Ability to maintain required driver’s license based on assignment
This is a safety- sensitive position subject to random drug testing in accordance with County policy Article XIII Drug and Alcohol Policy and Testing-Drug Free Workplace of the Sandoval County Personnel Rules and Regulation.
- Performs equipment inspections, conducts diagnostics, identifies mechanical difficulties, and performs preventative maintenance and repair work on gas and diesel equipment in assigned area; performs on-site service calls as needed; test drives vehicles and equipment; and transports equipment into shop if needed in order to make repairs.
- Performs servicing functions to include oil changes, greasing, lubrication; repair, replacement and balancing of tires on County vehicles, road equipment and heavy equipment.
- Replaces or repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts.
- Overhauls, repairs, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches; tunes up engines, replaced ignition parts, cleans and adjusts carburetors; diagnoses and repairs computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering, and cooling systems.
- Prepares and replaces components such as generators, distributors, relays, lights and switches; repairs, adjusts, and replaces brake systems including disc, hydraulic, air brakes, and machining/cutting rotors/drums; mount, dismount and balance tires; minor paint and body repair; steam clean equipment, vehicles and tools.
- Welds, fabricates, and assembles parts and equipment for automotive and heavy equipment; assists with purchase and inventory of equipment maintenance parts and materials; maintains work, time, and material records.
- Enters related vehicle/equipment records via a personal computer and work management software; cleans and maintains supplies, tools, equipment, instruments, and storage areas to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Assists other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs as needed.
- Performs other job-related tasks as assigned.
