What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian position at Sanpete County?
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of custodial duties related to cleaning the county courthouse, sheriff’s office, exhibition building and fairground restrooms.

Works under the general guidance and direction of the Facilities Maintenance Technicians

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Daily Duties:
- Sweep hallways and staircases, mop where necessary on all levels of the courthouse and as directed
- Clean restrooms; toilets, sinks, floors (sweep and mop as needed but at least twice a week), mirrors, dispensers, empty trash, check and refill all dispensers
- Vacuum all offices/rooms as directed based on need. Staircases to be vacuumed daily. All offices should be vacuumed at least once a week even if they have not been in use.
- Empty garbage cans at the sheriff’s office daily and replace liners as needed but at least once a week. This includes the outside trash cans.
- Clean break rooms
Weekly Duties:
- Mop hallways, remove rugs to avoid dirt rings around the rugs
- Dust and clean window seals
- Sweep sally ports and stair wells at the sheriff’s office
- Clean banisters and glass railings
Yearly Duties: Coordinate with Facilities Maintenance Technicians in each building to ensure when the following tasks are to be completed and by whom.
- Clean windows, blinds and window seals
- Wipe down all walls and baseboards (or more often as needed in the high traffic areas)
- Wax and polish floors in the hallways (or more often as needed)
- Carpet cleaning (shampoo)
- Clean flies out of the light fixtures
Performs other related duties as required or as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or GED
AND
- One(1) year of experience
OR
- An equivalent combination of both education and experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- A blend of practical cleaning skills, physical stamina, and attention to detail, along with the ability to follow instructions and maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Cleaning techniques: proficient in various cleaning methods, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting and floor care (waxing, stripping, buffing, polishing)
- Chemical handling: Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, their proper usage, safety protocols, and storage
- Equipment operation: Ability to safely and effectively operate cleaning equipment and tools, such as vacuums, floor buffers, and power washers
- Sanitation and hygiene: Understanding of sanitation and hygiene procedures, especially in restrooms and high-traffic areas
- Organization: Ability to keep cleaning supplies and equipment organized and maintain a clean workspace
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, staff and public
- Ability to spot and address areas that need extra cleaning or attention
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently to complete tasks
Work Environment:
Must be able to perform both indoor and outdoor physically demanding duties. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as lifting, walking, standing, stooping, reaching, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger, leg and foot dexterity required. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking, and guided problem solving. May be required to lift an excess of 75 pounds in a normal course of job performance.
